Amritsar sits on the flat Punjab plain, and there’s no honest way to sell it as a hiking destination. What it does have is a handful of genuinely pleasant walks, a heritage-fort rampart, and, if you want real elevation gain, a road trip to the Himalayan foothills that’s worth planning as its own trip rather than a day out.

The old city, on foot
The pedestrianized core around the Golden Temple is Amritsar’s best walk, full stop, narrow lanes, old havelis, and market streets, flat and easy the entire way. It’s not hiking in any technical sense, but it’s the walk most visitors actually do the most of, and it rewards no fixed route, just wandering.
Gobindgarh Fort’s own walls
Gobindgarh Fort, built in 1760 with four corner bastions around a roughly 1,000m perimeter, lets you walk a stretch of the original ramparts as part of a visit to the heritage park inside. It’s a short, flat walk with a genuine view over the fort’s own grounds rather than the city skyline, worth combining with the evening projection show on the same walls.
Harike Wetland Sanctuary, for an actual half day outdoors
Harike, a large freshwater wetland roughly 60km from Amritsar (verify current distance and access), is the closest thing to a nature outing this region offers, flat wetland trails and boardwalks rather than any real elevation, but a genuine change of pace and a serious birdwatching destination in winter when migratory species arrive. Confirm current access and guide arrangements locally before building a day around it, this one needs more advance planning than anything inside the city.
If you actually want to hike, go to the hills
Amritsar sits a reasonable road trip from the Himalayan foothill towns of Dharamshala and Dalhousie, where real mountain trails start. That’s genuinely a separate multi-day trip, not a day excursion from Amritsar, so don’t try to force it into a city-based itinerary; treat Amritsar as the holy-city-and-food half of a longer Punjab-to-hills trip instead.
