7 Days: Vegas and the Nevada Desert

A full week is enough to do all five Nevada day trips at an unhurried pace, with a genuine pool day left over instead of squeezing in a sixth desert morning. Shorter trip? The 6-day version drops the rest day. This is the same spine, just with breathing room added back in.

Day 1: Land, settle onto the Strip

Land at Harry Reid International; rideshare pickup is inside the parking garage, not curbside, with a flat $4.50 surcharge on the fare. Budget $20-35 to a mid-Strip hotel, and check the resort fee before booking, roughly $42-62 a night with tax. Walk to Bellagio for the fountains, free every 15-30 minutes, then have an early night.

Day 2: Red Rock Canyon

Head 20-30 minutes west to Red Rock Canyon . The Scenic Drive needs a reserved timed-entry slot plus a $15 vehicle fee; budget a half day, longer if you hike Calico Tanks or a shorter canyon trail.

Day 3: Valley of Fire

Fifty to sixty minutes northeast: red Aztec sandstone and petroglyphs older than the Strip by millennia. Entry runs $15 per vehicle for non-residents, $10 on Nevada plates. Go early; the exposed rock holds heat well into the afternoon.

Day 4: Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

Forty-five minutes southeast for the shortest, highest-payoff trip on this list. Visitor Center admission ($15 adult, $12 ages 4-16) covers the exhibits and rooftop deck; the Power Plant Tour (roughly $25-30, book ahead) adds the turbine hall. Give Lake Mead half an hour afterward.

Day 5: Mount Charleston

Fifty to sixty minutes northwest on US-95 and NV-157, gaining roughly 6,000 feet of elevation into the pine forest of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area . Charleston Peak tops out at 11,916 feet; an easy nature loop beats the full 17.5-mile summit trail unless the whole day is built around it.

Day 6: Seven Magic Mountains, then a slow Downtown day

Start with a quick detour to Seven Magic Mountains , 20-25 minutes south off I-15 exit 25, free, open 24 hours, with its own gravel lot. Thirty to 45 minutes there is plenty. Spend the rest of the day Downtown: the free Fremont Street canopy show, the Neon Museum if you haven’t already, and a cheaper dinner than the resort corridor offers.

Day 7: Pool day, then home

Return the rental car; you won’t need it again. Spend the day at your hotel pool or a dayclub if that’s your scene, and use whatever’s left of the afternoon for one thing you skipped rather than trying to add a new destination this late in the trip.

Does a full week actually need a dedicated pool day?

Yes, after five desert mornings the alternative is arriving home more tired than when you left. A pool day costs nothing beyond what you’re already paying for the room, and it’s the difference between a trip that ends well and one that ends with everyone asleep on the plane.

Should you add a Grand Canyon day instead of the pool day?
