2 Days: Vegas and the Canyons
Two days is one park, not a Southwest tour: a night in Vegas, then a full day at Grand Canyon West’s Skywalk and back. It’s the shortest honest version of this trip. Add Death Valley with our 3-day version , or go for the full Utah loop with 7 days .

| Day | Stop | Distance from Vegas | Drive time | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Las Vegas | - | - | Basecamp, rental car, gear up |
| 2 | Grand Canyon West | 120-130 miles | 2-2.5 hrs | Skywalk, Hualapai land, round trip |
Day 1: Vegas basecamp, not the trip
Fly into Harry Reid International and pick up the rental car at the airport rather than downtown; you want it before the Strip, not after. One night here is enough. Our Las Vegas Strip guide covers the resort-fee math and the one or two things actually worth doing if you’ve got an evening to burn, but this is a road-trip base, not the destination. Fill the tank, buy more water than feels necessary since you’ll want it in the desert tomorrow, and get an early night: Grand Canyon West’s gate opens around 7am and the drive alone runs 2-2.5 hours.
Day 2: Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk
Grand Canyon West is Hualapai tribal land, not Grand Canyon National Park, a distinction that matters because an NPS annual pass is worthless here. You’re buying the $99 All-Access Pass directly, which covers the glass Skywalk, shuttle, and a handful of viewpoints. It’s 120-130 miles and 2-2.5 hours via US-93, and if you’ve got an extra hour, Kingman’s Arizona Route 66 Museum is a worthwhile backtrack before heading north on Pierce Ferry Road, not a stop on the direct route. Budget the full day for drive, rim walk, and drive back. This is not the South Rim, the one in every postcard; that’s 4.5 hours one-way and a separate multi-day trip entirely (full details at nps.gov/grca ).
Two days buys exactly one park and a decent Skywalk photo. If that’s the only Southwest stop on your list, it’s worth it. If you want more than one park, this itinerary is the wrong length; go to the 4-day version instead.
