7 Days: Marrakech to the Sahara
Same four-day core as our 6-day plan : Agafay, Ourika, Essaouira, Ait Ben Haddou. The seventh day is what actually changes the trip: instead of Zagora’s shorter run, you have exactly enough time for Merzouga and Erg Chebbi’s big dunes, the ones from every Morocco photo, at the cost of a genuine 9-10 hour drive each way. That trade means dropping the High Atlas day the 5-day version keeps; if Imlil matters more to you than the big dunes, that plan is the better fit. Day 1: Land, taste the medina, spend the evening in Agafay
An hour or two around Jemaa el-Fnaa on arrival is enough to get oriented; ONMT’s practical Morocco information is worth reading before you land. Head to Agafay for the late afternoon: rocky, scrubby plateau rather than sand dunes, but the camel ride, quad session, and dinner-under-the-stars package runs a convenient 4pm-to-9:30pm window. Packages run roughly 400-950 MAD per person (about €40-90).
Day 2: Ourika Valley, the easiest real trip out of the city
Ourika sits 40-60km and 60-90 minutes into the High Atlas foothills. The draw is Setti Fatma’s seven waterfalls, a roughly two-hour round trip hike to the lower falls, plus Berber villages and an argan oil cooperative along the way. Full-day guided tours with lunch run roughly 250-850 MAD per person.
Day 3: Essaouira, the only real coast trip from Marrakech
Marrakech is inland, roughly 2.5-3 hours from the nearest coast, and Essaouira is that coast, its medina a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Supratours buses run 100-120 MAD each way, a shared grand taxi runs roughly 600-900 MAD, and a guided day tour runs up to about 1,300 MAD.
Day 4: Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, the road that leads to the desert
The drive crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen ksar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and Ouarzazate’s film studios have stood in for everything from Bible epics to Game of Thrones. Tonight you sleep in Marrakech one last time; tomorrow this same road is the start of a much longer drive.
Day 5: Depart for Merzouga, the real Sahara push begins
Erg Chebbi, the “big dune” Sahara near Merzouga, is 560km and a genuine 9-10 hours from Marrakech, too far for a single day in either direction. The standard product is a 2-night, 3-day round trip with an overnight stop near the Dades or Todra Gorge on the way out, roughly €89-250+ per person depending on camp standard. Today’s drive retraces the Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate road from yesterday, then continues past it into the gorge country.
Is nine to ten hours in a van actually worth it? Once, yes. It is the honest cost of seeing Erg Chebbi’s real dune sea rather than Agafay’s stony scrubland or Zagora’s smaller dunes, and splitting the drive with an overnight in the gorges keeps any single day from being unbearable. If that math does not appeal, Zagora’s shorter loop on the 6-day itinerary gets you a real desert night for a third less driving.
Day 6: Erg Chebbi’s dunes, camel ride, desert camp
Arrive at Merzouga in the afternoon, then ride a camel out to the dune camp for sunset, dinner, and Berber music under a sky with essentially no light pollution. This is the payoff day of the whole itinerary, and the reason the previous five days of driving and day trips exist as a build-up to it rather than the main event themselves.
Day 7: Back through the gorges to Marrakech
The return leg mirrors day five, usually with a stop at Todra Gorge’s narrow limestone canyon walls if your route did not cover it on the way out. Expect to land back in Marrakech by evening, sunburned and short on sleep, with the kind of story the other six days do not quite produce on their own.
Pack layers for the desert camp regardless of season, nights in the Sahara drop cold even when the day hit 40C, and confirm your tour includes both overnight stops rather than a rushed single-stop version that cuts the driving time by pushing through in the dark.
