5 Days: Marrakech to the High Atlas

Same spine as our 4-day plan , Agafay, Ourika, Essaouira, and Ait Ben Haddou, plus a fifth day trekking the Imlil foothills instead of another long drive. Five days is not enough to add the Sahara honestly, that needs the 6-day or 7-day version instead; this plan keeps the pace sustainable and trades desert distance for mountain scenery. Day 1: Land, taste the medina, spend the evening in Agafay

An hour or two around Jemaa el-Fnaa on arrival is enough to get oriented; ONMT’s practical Morocco information is worth reading before you land. Head to Agafay for the late afternoon: rocky, scrubby plateau rather than sand dunes, but the camel ride, quad session, and dinner-under-the-stars package runs a convenient 4pm-to-9:30pm window. Packages run roughly 400-950 MAD per person (about €40-90) depending on the operator and whether transfers are private.

Day 2: Ourika Valley, the easiest real trip out of the city

Ourika sits 40-60km and 60-90 minutes into the High Atlas foothills. The draw is Setti Fatma’s seven waterfalls, a roughly two-hour round trip hike to the lower falls, plus Berber villages and an argan oil cooperative along the way. Full-day guided tours with lunch run roughly 250-850 MAD per person; confirm the waterfall hike is actually on the itinerary.

Day 3: Essaouira, the only real coast trip from Marrakech

Marrakech is inland, roughly 2.5-3 hours from the nearest coast, and Essaouira is that coast: a walled, whitewashed fishing-port medina with a working harbour. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Supratours buses run 100-120 MAD each way, a shared grand taxi runs roughly 600-900 MAD, and a guided day tour runs up to about 1,300 MAD. It is rushed as a single day; consider an overnight if the schedule allows it.

Day 4: Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, the road that leads to the desert

The drive crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen ksar dating mostly to the 17th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and Ouarzazate’s film studios nearby have stood in for everything from Bible epics to Game of Thrones. A single-day round trip runs 10-12 hours in the van for a few hours on the ground; group day tours run in a similar per-person range to the Essaouira trip above.

Day 5: Imlil and the High Atlas, trekking country not a summit day

Imlil sits about 65km and 90 minutes from Marrakech, the trailhead village for Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 metres. A day trip gets you a two-to-three hour walk around Imlil’s terraced villages and mule paths, not the summit itself. Day-tour operators run the loop for roughly 280-465 MAD per person, and it is the least strenuous, most scenic day of the five, a deliberate wind-down after the long drives on days three and four.

Can you summit Toubkal on this trip? No. Reaching Toubkal’s peak is a multi-day guided trek, roughly €120-280 per person for the full climb with an overnight refuge stay, not something a day trip from Marrakech can include. Treat day five as a preview of the mountains, not an attempt at the summit.

Layer your clothing for day five regardless of the season, Imlil sits at altitude and the temperature swings hard between the trailhead and the valley floor once the sun drops.
