4 Days: Vegas and the Canyons

Day 1: Vegas basecamp, not the trip
Fly into Harry Reid International and pick up the rental car at the airport. One night is enough; our Las Vegas Strip guide covers the resort-fee math if you want an evening there. Fill the tank and stock up on water for three separate desert and mountain-park drives ahead.
Day 2: Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk
Grand Canyon West is Hualapai tribal land, not Grand Canyon National Park; an NPS pass doesn’t work here. The $99 All-Access Pass covers the Skywalk, shuttle, and viewpoints, 120-130 miles and 2-2.5 hours via US-93. This isn’t the South Rim, the postcard one; that’s 4.5 hours one-way and its own overnight trip (fees at nps.gov/grca ).
Day 3: Death Valley, the day trip with real stakes
Death Valley is 120 miles and 2-2.5 hours via NV-160 and CA-190, $30 per vehicle (nps.gov/deva ), and a genuine summer safety risk, not just a hot afternoon. Badwater Basin and Zabriskie Point are the two stops worth the drive. Do this one October through April; skip it for a rest day in summer instead.
Day 4: Zion, rushed into one day
Zion is 160 miles and 2.5-3 hours up I-15, and doing it as a single day from Vegas means leaving by 6am and accepting a 10-plus hour round trip once you count park time. Our 5-day version turns this into a proper overnight instead, and if Zion is the one park on this list worth doing right, that extra day is the better trade. The $35 vehicle entrance, good 7 days, now carries an added $100-per-person surcharge for non-US residents (current fees at nps.gov/zion ), and covers the free shuttle running March 7 to November 28, 2026, mandatory for Zion Canyon Scenic Drive in season. Stick to the Riverside Walk and Emerald Pools, both flat and under 3 miles round trip; Angels Landing needs a $6 permit application you won’t have time to plan around on a same-day visit.
Four days is a real taste of three parks, not a relaxed trip. If day four’s 6am start doesn’t appeal, cut Zion and keep the extra day in Vegas instead; there’s no shame in a 3-day loop that doesn’t punish you for it.
