What Guided Sightseeing Looks Like Here Sevan has no local sightseeing network and no standalone ticketed attraction tours. Guided visits come as part of day packages sold from Yerevan. The lake’s sights are few and spread along the shore, so a package is mainly a way to get a driver, a route and some commentary in one booking. Day Packages from Yerevan Listings for Sevan day tours run 8 to 11 hours.

What Sevan Offers Couples Lake Sevan is a high mountain lake rather than a resort strip, so romance here is quiet: big skies, cool air, a good table by the water and an early start. At about 1,900 m the evenings cool quickly even in summer, so pack a jacket. Plan one or two nights rather than a long stay. Where to Sleep The Sevan Writers’ House is a Soviet modernist guest house (Architectuul ) on the peninsula, designed by Gevorg Kochar and Mikael Mazmanyan and built from 1932 to 1935, with a lounge added in 1963 to 1965.

Beach Time Sevan National Park runs free public beaches with changing rooms, showers, sunshades and children’s playgrounds. The season usually opens about 1 July, and July and August are the swimming months. Most of the shoreline is pebbles rather than sand, so pack water shoes for small feet. The lake sits at about 1,900 m and the water is cool to cold, roughly 15 to 24 C depending on the spot.

What to Expect Sevan has no organised city walking tours. The walks are self-guided and short, and they sit on a spread-out shoreline rather than in a walkable town centre. Sevan town lies about 3 km from the water, so most walkers start from the peninsula car park, the Noratus village or a lakeside stop reached by car or taxi. Sevanavank and the Peninsula The best-known walk is the climb from the car park to the churches: about 200 stone steps, uneven and in places without railings.

Sevanavank Sevanavank stands on a peninsula north-east of Sevan town, about 5 km by road. An inscription dates its founding to 874, by Princess Mariam, daughter of Ashot I. Two churches remain: Surp Arakelots, the Holy Apostles, and Surp Astvatsatsin, the Holy Mother of God. Both are cruciform with octagonal drums. The peninsula was an island until the lake level fell by about 20 m from the Stalin era onward.

A Three Day Plan Day 1: the peninsula and the shore. Drive the 65 km from Yerevan on the M4, which takes 1 to 1.5 hours, and reach Sevanavank early. Climb the roughly 200 steps to the two churches, founded in 874, then spend the afternoon on a public beach if it is July or August. Finish with trout, whitefish or crayfish at a lakeside restaurant such as Collette on the M4 or Bohem tea house in Sevan town.

Getting from Yerevan Lake Sevan is about 65 km from Yerevan, and the M4 drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Car or hired driver. The easiest way to link Sevanavank, Hayravank and Noratus in one day. A taxi or hired driver for the day is the easy way to link the lake’s sights; agree the rate before you set off. Marshrutka. Minibuses to Sevan town take about 45 minutes to 1 hour 15.

Travel advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, and the US lists Armenia at Level 2 with a warning for the Azerbaijan border region. Lake Sevan’s main sights, Sevanavank, Hayravank and Noratus, lie outside those areas. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go, keep to the M4 and M10 main roads and do not drive east of Vardenis.
