Not Every Kharkhorin Day Trip Fits a Day
Not every excursion sold as a “Kharkhorin day trip” actually fits in a day. The five real options here span from an easy hour each way to a drive long enough that calling it a day trip is optimistic.
The genuinely easy ones
Khöshöö Tsaidam, home to the 8th century Bilge Khan and Kül Tigin monument and the original Orkhon runic inscriptions, is about 45 km and roughly an hour north on a paved road, an easy half-day round trip including time at the small museum. Elsen Tasarkhai, the “Mini Gobi” sand dune belt bordered by Khogno Khan Mountain, sits about 80 km east, also close to an hour each way, with camel rides and a visit to the ruined Övgön Monastery tucked into a granite canyon.
The one that eats a full day
Tövkhön Monastery, founded in 1648 by Zanabazar on Shireet Ulaan Mountain at 2,312 meters, is 70 km southwest, but the drive alone runs 2.5 to 3 hours each way on rough tracks, before the 3 km, 45 to 60 minute hike up through larch forest to the meditation caves. Call this one a full day, not a half day.
The one that really isn’t a day trip
Orkhon Waterfall (Ulaan Tsutgalan) is 120 km southwest, 3.5 to 4 hours each way, meaning 7 to 8 hours of driving alone before you’ve spent a minute at the 20 meter falls or the basalt canyon around them. Treated as a there-and-back day trip, that’s sunrise to dusk in a vehicle with barely any time at the destination; treated as an overnight near the falls, it actually works. Tsenkher Hot Springs, about 110 km and 2.5 hours west, sits in between, comfortably a long day trip if you start early.
The verdict
Book Khöshöö Tsaidam or Elsen Tasarkhai if you only have one spare day; save Orkhon Waterfall for a trip where you can stay over near the site instead of driving both directions in the same 24 hours.

Every one of these routes past the paved highway needs a 4WD (a UAZ Furgon or Land Cruiser), not a sedan; the tracks to Tövkhön and Orkhon Waterfall are rutted, rocky and cross unbridged streams. Vehicle charters run roughly 200,000 to 350,000 MNT per day, and that’s before food or entrance fees, all of it cash.
