Skip The Villa, Book The River Tent Instead
Every brochure for this stretch of Mauritius’s east coast points you toward the same postcard: a private pool villa at the Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita in Beau Champ, 64 acres of garden and an overwater spa pavilion. It is a genuinely excellent hotel. It is also not the most romantic night available at Grand River South East (GRSE), and it isn’t close.
The better bet is forty minutes down the road in Deux Frères, at the Otentic Eco Tent Experience. Couples sleep in an elevated wooden safari tent on stilts, over the river itself, with nothing between the mattress and the water but mosquito mesh and a lantern. Dinner is wood-fired Creole cooking eaten to the sound of the current instead of piped-in resort music. A villa gives you privacy behind a wall. A river tent gives you the river.
Why the contrarian pick wins
- A pool villa insulates you from the coast. A riverside tent puts you inside it, which is the entire reason people come to GRSE rather than a resort strip elsewhere on the island.
- Otentic throws in complimentary kayaks, so the same morning you would otherwise spend at a spa can instead be a quiet paddle upstream toward the GRSE waterfall gorge before the day’s speedboats start running, past cliffs where Mauritian flying foxes are still settling in for the day.

Where the villa still wins Credit where it’s due: if what you actually want is air conditioning, a private plunge pool and zero contact with insects, the tent is the wrong call and Anahita is the right one. There is also a genuine case for a private sunset catamaran charter across the lagoon toward the Bambou mountains for a specific occasion, an anniversary or a proposal, where the point is the boat and crew rather than the view alone.
Verdict: for an ordinary romantic night at GRSE, the tent beats the villa on atmosphere and on price. Save the villa, and the catamaran charter, for when you specifically want service and polish rather than the river itself.
