Romantic Montevideo: Sunsets and Stays
Montevideo is a gentle, unhurried capital rather than a honeymoon resort, so romance here is mostly sunsets, cafes, an evening at the theatre and a good hotel. The grand set pieces for couples are on day trips out of the city. Prices are in Uruguayan pesos (UYU), and about 40 UYU buy US$1. Street crime exists, so couples should keep phones and cameras out of sight and use a taxi or ride-hailing car after dark rather than walking quiet backstreets. The UK government advises against walking downtown or around the port alone, especially at night and at weekends.
Sunset on the Rambla
The free option is also the best. Walk the waterfront at Punta Carretas, where the lighthouse dates from 1876, or sit near Playa Ramirez or Pocitos as the light goes. Locals bring mate and a thermos and settle on the seawall. The water is a brown to green estuary, so come for the sky and the evening mood rather than for a swim.
An evening at Teatro Solis
The opera house at Buenos Aires 678 stages opera, ballet and performances by the Comedia Nacional. Check the programme and book seats before you arrive. The box office is open daily from 15:00 to 19:00. If the evening you want is sold out, a daytime guided tour is an alternative, and it is free on Wednesdays.
Coffee and dinner
Cafe Brasilero, at Ituzaingo 1447 in Ciudad Vieja, is said to be the oldest cafe in the city, dating from 1877. Opening hours are not confirmed, so check on the day. For a grill dinner, La Pulperia at Lagunillas 448 in Punta Carretas serves parrilla. Reports on its opening days and its reservation rules conflict, so check ahead. Restaurants, bars and cafes cut VAT from 22% to about 13% for card or electronic payment, and the cut runs to 30 April 2027.
Where to stay
Hotel Casino Carrasco opened in 1921 and is now listed as the Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa, at Rambla Republica de Mexico 6451 in Carrasco. Alma Historica Boutique Hotel faces Plaza Zabala in a restored townhouse of the 1920s. It is described as having 15 rooms and a roof terrace with a hot tub, though that comes from secondary sources, so confirm details when you book. Hotels charge 0% VAT to non-residents who show foreign ID. You can compare rooms on Booking.com .
Tango and a wine lunch
Free open-air milongas are authorised in Plaza Fabini, Plaza Cagancha and Plaza de los 33 Orientales, though schedules vary. A winery lunch at Bodega Bouza, in Montevideo department, needs advance booking.
Romance beyond the city
Colonia del Sacramento suits an overnight stay: the old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Calle de los Suspiros is made for an evening stroll. COT lists about 2 hours 45 minutes and UYU 579 one way from Tres Cruces. At Punta Ballena, the Ceremonia al Sol at Casapueblo takes place daily at sunset. Entry is UYU 600, and visitors are advised to arrive early. A bus to Punta del Este costs UYU 466 one way. There is no ferry from Montevideo to Colonia.
