Montreal: Where to Base Yourself

Where to stay changes when Montreal is a base rather than the whole trip: proximity to Gare Centrale and VIA Rail matters more than it would on a city-only visit.
The pick for VIA Rail day trips
Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth sits directly on top of Gare Centrale downtown, which makes it the practical choice if Quebec City, Ottawa, or Trois-Rivières are on your plan; you’re on the platform in minutes rather than crossing town first. It also holds Suite 1742, where John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their 1969 Bed-In for “Give Peace a Chance.”
Old Montreal, if the train isn’t the priority
Hôtel Nelligan and Hôtel William Gray are the two named picks in Old Montreal, both putting you inside the cobblestone core, walkable to Notre-Dame Basilica and the Old Port, but a longer trip to Gare Centrale than staying downtown.
The Golden Square Mile option
Ritz-Carlton Montreal, open since 1912 (the first hotel to carry the Ritz-Carlton name), sits in the Golden Square Mile adjacent to downtown, another reasonable option if train access matters less than the neighborhood itself.
If a day trip becomes an overnight
Fairmont Château Montebello, about 2 hours west near Parc Omega, is the one out-of-town overnight worth naming if the Montebello wildlife-park day trip turns into a two-day plan instead. Quebec City is the other place worth considering an overnight, given the 3-hour trip each way makes a same-day round trip mostly transit.
Beyond the named hotels
Plateau and Mile End don’t have a single standout hotel worth naming, but they’re worth considering for a more local stay if you’re spending real time in the city core before heading out; recommend by neighborhood rather than a specific property there. Whichever you pick, factor Quebec’s 14.975% sales tax into the quoted room rate, and expect availability to tighten around the F1 Grand Prix weekend in late May.
Getting from any of these to Gare Centrale
Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth aside, none of the other named hotels sit right on the rail platform, so budget 10-20 minutes by metro or on foot from Old Montreal or the Golden Square Mile to Gare Centrale on a day-trip morning. The STM metro runs $3.75 a ride and covers this easily; a taxi is rarely necessary for a trip this short inside the city.
