Romantic Evenings in Tbilisi
Travel advisory, as of October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russian-occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and against all but essential travel to areas next to their boundary lines. Anti-government protests have continued for well over a year in central Tbilisi, around the Parliament on Rustaveli Avenue. They have sometimes turned violent, often on Saturday evenings and political anniversaries, so keep away from them. Read the FCDO advice for Georgia and check travel.state.gov before you book.
Tbilisi suits couples because its pleasures are slow ones: a hot bath, a table with a view, a glass of amber wine and a walk across a lit bridge. Evenings are the best time, and a long weekend is enough. Prices are in lari (GEL) and come from secondary sources, so check before you go.
A private sulphur bath
The bathhouses of Abanotubani rent private rooms by the hour, and the price is per room, so two people pay the same as one. Mosaic-tiled rooms are fed by natural sulphur water and are followed by a kisa scrub and tea. Rough rates are:
- Chreli Abano, also called the Orbeliani Baths: about 130 to 600 GEL an hour, booked online at chreliabano.ge .
- Gulo’s Thermal Spa: about 150 to 300 GEL, booked by phone or Messenger, open until about 03:00.
- Bath No. 5: private rooms about 120 to 200 GEL.
- Royal Bath House: about 150 to 290 GEL, and King Erekle’s about 200 to 400 GEL.
A kisa scrub is about 15 to 30 GEL, paid in cash. Book ahead for evenings. Do not plan on the Queen’s Bath, which is currently shut for works. The sulphur baths guide has more detail.
Sunset on Mtatsminda
Ride the funicular from Chonkadze Street, or the cableway from Rustaveli Avenue, up Mount Mtatsminda for a view over the river and the old roofs. You need the Mtatsminda Park card, about 2 GEL, plus about 10 to 12 GEL each way. A historic funicular restaurant complex at the top is known for Lagidze lemonades and cream-filled pastries. Hours and menus vary, so check on the day. On a Saturday, avoid the Rustaveli end of the walk in the evening, since protests can gather there.
Natural wine evening
Georgian amber wines are made in clay qvevri, and a bar visit is a pleasant two-hour plan. Vino Underground at 15 Galaktion Tabidze Street is a wine bar, and Wine Factory N1 at 1 Petriashvili Street, in Vera, is a cellar complex that is busiest in the evening. Tasting prices vary by venue, so ask before ordering a flight.
The lit bridge
The Bridge of Peace, about 150 m of steel and glass opened in 2010, is lit with LEDs after dusk. It leads from Old Town to Rike Park, and the walk back through Abanotubani is easy after a bath.
A night in Sighnaghi
Sighnaghi, about 2 hours east, is a walled hill town with 23 towers and long views across the Alazani Valley. It is a gentle overnight with a late wine dinner. Marshrutkas run from Samgori station for about 10 GEL, but a hired driver is easier with luggage. To compare rooms in town or in Tbilisi, search Tbilisi hotels .
