Porto for Families: From Zoo to Museum

An indoor boat ride through Portugal’s Age of Discovery is a strange thing to find in a history museum, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that keeps kids from asking to leave early.
World of Discoveries
An interactive museum built around Portugal’s era of maritime exploration, finishing with an indoor boat ride through its exhibits. It runs about 12 euros adult and 6 euros child, and the whole visit takes roughly 45 minutes, short enough to fit around a nap schedule.
Zoo Santo Inácio
Zoo Santo Inácio sits across the river in Avintes, Vila Nova de Gaia, about 10 minutes from central Porto. It holds somewhere between 600 and 800 animals across 200 to 270 species, with confirmed lions, tigers and giraffes among them. Adult admission is 17.90 euros. SEA LIFE Porto

Crystal Palace Gardens
Jardim do Palácio de Cristal costs nothing and is open all day, with a small lake, rowboats, and river views that work well for a slower afternoon between the busier stops. There’s no actual crystal palace inside; the original 19th-century glass building was demolished in 1951 and only the gardens kept the name.
Serralves’ park and treetop walkway
Beyond the contemporary art museum, Serralves’ grounds include a treetop canopy walkway that works on its own even if the art inside isn’t the draw for younger kids. Full access runs 24 euros adult, park-only entry 12 euros, and it’s free on the first Sunday of each month.
Most restaurants outside the busiest tourist strips will happily simplify or split a dish for a child on request, and the flatter routes near the Crystal Palace Gardens and the riverfront are the easiest with a stroller; the hill climbs around the historic center are steeper than they look in photos.
