Porto Day Trips: Douro to Aveiro

There are two different trains into the Douro, at two very different prices, and only one of them runs every day of the year. Knowing which is which before you book saves both money and a scheduling headache.
Douro Valley
The regular Inter-Regional train to Pinhão costs about 12.45 euros one way, 22.40 euros return, roughly 2 hours 20 minutes from Porto, run by CP, Comboios de Portugal . The separate Douro Historical Train, a heritage service between Régua and Tua, runs weekends and some Wednesdays from June to October at around 60 euros adult, 32 euros child, a pricier seasonal product rather than the everyday way there. Going by train reaches Pinhão and Pocinho directly and cheaply; a self-drive or an organized train-cruise-lunch package reaches the working quintas a solo train traveler can’t easily book into on the same day. Guimarães
About 45 to 60 minutes from Porto by train or car. Guimarães Castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza are the pair worth building a half or full day around, with the historic center’s medieval streets filling in the rest.
Braga
Roughly 45 minutes by train, and the train is the easy choice unless you’re combining Braga with Guimarães in the same car trip. Bom Jesus do Monte’s zigzag Baroque staircase is the reason to go.
Aveiro
About an hour by train, with moliceiro canal boats and Art Nouveau houses as the draw. It’s a lighter, quirkier half-day than the other three on this list, and the train is genuinely easier than driving in for a single afternoon.
Peneda-Gerês, only if you have a car
Portugal’s only national park sits roughly 100km and a 2-hour drive from Porto, with no realistic public-transport route into the park itself. Put the Douro Valley at the top of the list rather than treating it as optional, and pair Guimarães with Braga on one day if your schedule is tight.
