Three national capitals sit within a single train ride of Prague, close enough that treating this city as a one-stop trip leaves real value on the table. None of what follows is a rushed single day, and trying to force one is how a good trip turns mediocre.
Český Krumlov, as an overnight

Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland
Pravčická brána, Europe’s largest natural sandstone arch, sits roughly 2-2.5 hours each way by car, and meaningfully slower by public transport, a train to Děčín then a local bus to Hřensko. Attempted independently as a single day this realistically runs 10-12 hours door to door, which argues for an overnight in Děčín or Hřensko instead.
Dresden, Germany
Direct trains run roughly 2 hours, with fares from around €8, a genuinely fast, cheap overnight or even a very long day extension of a Prague stay.
Vienna, Austria
Direct trains run roughly 4 hours, fares from around €16, a different imperial-capital register entirely from Prague, and an easy 2-3 night add-on.
Budapest, Hungary
Direct trains run roughly 6.5-7 hours via Brno or Bratislava, or with a change in Vienna, firmly a multi-night commitment, the classic third leg of the well-known Prague-Vienna-Budapest rail loop.
Berlin, Germany
Direct trains run roughly 4-4.5 hours, a further genuine multi-night option distinct from the closer Dresden trip.

Verdict: Dresden is the easiest add-on at 2 hours each way if time is tight, while Krumlov rewards committing to the full overnight rather than a rushed pass-through.
