Prague Day Trips That Fit in One Day

Not every nearby Bohemian town belongs on the same list. Some genuinely fit in a single day out of Prague, one is better as an overnight, and one shouldn’t be filed under “fun day trip” at all.
Kutná Hora and Sedlec Ossuary
The default choice: a train from Hlavní nádraží takes 41-50 minutes, with about 19 departures daily. The Ossuary’s rules have genuinely tightened, advance timed-ticket booking is now required instead of casual walk-up entry, and photography is banned inside the lower chapel where the bone decorations hang. Reserve a timed slot on the Ossuary’s own site ahead of time. Adult admission is CZK 220, or roughly CZK 360 combined with St Barbara’s Cathedral, and the whole trip fits comfortably into half a day.
Karlštejn Castle
Around a 40-minute train from Hlavní nádraží, followed by a genuine 2.5km, 30-40 minute uphill walk to the gate. Interiors are guided-tour-only: the basic Tour I (“Imperial Residence of Charles IV”) costs CZK 250 per person in groups of up to 16 departing roughly every 30 minutes, while the Castle Chapels tour, covering the Chapel of the Holy Cross, requires advance booking at CZK 550. Book ahead on the castle’s own site , especially for summer weekends when popular slots sell out.
Karlovy Vary
The bus, roughly 1h35-2h15 direct, is the clear choice over the slower, less direct train at about 3.5 hours. This is a different kind of day entirely, a walk along the colonnades and a taste of the mineral springs rather than a castle interior or an ossuary. Don’t schedule it back to back with another full day trip; it rewards a slower pace.
Terezín
Terezin was a Jewish ghetto and a Gestapo transit camp and prison. Tens of thousands died here and tens of thousands more were held before deportation to the extermination camps. It is a memorial, and a visit is not a day out. A bus from Florenc takes roughly an hour. Admission runs CZK 310 full price, CZK 240 reduced, or CZK 630 for a family, with the ticket valid across 4 days, and guided tours are included but must be reserved ahead, next-day slots open for booking only between 9am and 4pm the day before. Book only through the memorial’s own site , never a third-party reseller, and expect genuinely heavy content, less suited to young children.
Why Český Krumlov isn’t here

Verdict: Kutná Hora is the easiest single day if you only have one to spare, Karlštejn is the runner-up once you’ve booked the interior in advance, and Terezín deserves a day of its own rather than a slot next to a castle and a brewery.
