Milan Sightseeing: What to Skip
Milan punishes bad planning more than it punishes a small budget. Almost everything here can be bought on the day at the cost of a queue. Exactly one thing cannot be bought on the day at any price, and the gap between those two facts is where most Milan itineraries go wrong. Below is what earns its slot, what does not, and the hours that decide it.
Skip the door, book the Cenacolo
The Last Supper is the only Milan ticket with no walk-up route. Nothing is sold at the entrance, ever. Capacity is 40 people per 15-minute slot, the room is climate-controlled because the work is tempera and oil on dry plaster rather than fresco, and it started deteriorating in Leonardo’s own lifetime. €15 adult, €2 for ages 18 to 25, free under 18, and a reservation is required for every category including the free ones. Open Tuesday to Sunday 08:15 to 19:00, last entry 18:45, closed Mondays.
The rule that catches people who did everything right: collect at the ticket office at least 30 minutes before your slot or the booking is void. Treat the slot time as a deadline you are already late for. Availability is at cenacolovinciano.org , and if it is empty, guided operators hold their own allocations. If you never get in, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie at Piazza di Santa Maria delle Grazie 2 is free and is a separate building from the refectory. Solari’s Gothic nave of 1463 meets Bramante’s apse and dome of 1492. It is a fifteen-minute walk from the Duomo and a better hour than standing about hoping.
Skip the single Duomo price
There is no single price. There are five tiers plus a Wednesday variant, and a page quoting one number is wrong however carefully it is worded.

The Duomo Museum closes on Wednesdays, which is why the cathedral-plus-museum ticket falls to €8 / €4 that day. Tickets last two days. The lift stops at the first terrace, around 50 m, and everything above and all of the way down is on foot. Buy at duomomilano.it and nowhere that looks like it.
Skip the MilanoCard if you came for the sights
It is a transport pass with 10 to 30 percent discounts attached, plus free entry to a handful of minor civic museums. It does not cover the Duomo, the terraces or the Last Supper. As a travel card it is reasonable. Buy it for the transport, not for the entries.
Do the Castello, and do not trust its posted hours
One €5 ticket, €3 reduced, admits you once to every museum inside the Castello Sforzesco on the day of purchase: the Pinacoteca, the Museum of Ancient Art with the Pietà Rondanini, the musical instruments, the furniture, the Egyptian and archaeological rooms. Nothing inside is ticketed separately.
The museums run Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:30, last entry 16:30, closed Mondays. The much longer hours you will see quoted belong to the courtyards, which are free, open daily and a different thing entirely. Free museum entry falls on the first Sunday of the month and the first and third Tuesday after 14:00. Confirm on the Castello site .
Is the Pinacoteca di Brera worth €20?
Yes, if you can go on the right day. Since 1 March the ticket is the Grande Brera at €20, covering the Pinacoteca and Palazzo Citterio, the contemporary wing opened on 7 December 2024. The Pinacoteca opened in 1809, more than two centuries after the Uffizi, and holds Mantegna’s Dead Christ, Piero della Francesca’s Montefeltro Altarpiece, Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus and Hayez’s The Kiss.
The trap is the calendar. Palazzo Citterio opens only Thursday to Sunday, 14:00 to 19:00, while the Pinacoteca runs Tuesday to Sunday 08:30 to 19:15. Buy on a Tuesday and half the ticket is unusable. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay €4. Hours at pinacotecabrera.org .
Do the Museo Teatrale, and the noon queue at La Scala
La Scala’s visitable half is the Museo Teatrale, €12 full and €8 reduced, open daily 09:30 to 17:30 with last admission at 17:00. The ticket includes looking into the auditorium from a third-order box, though not during rehearsals, performances or events, so the view is likely rather than guaranteed. Details at museoscala.org . A museum ticket is not a performance seat, and the real bargain is the 140 gallery places released at the box office from 12:00 on each performance day at around €13 to €15.
Where the Navigli are, and how long Milan takes
The canals run from the Darsena at Porta Ticinese. The metro stop is Porta Genova on M2. The Naviglio Martesana is a different canal in the north-east of the city. Along the Naviglio Grande, the Vicolo dei Lavandai keeps the covered communal washhouse and its stone washing slabs.
Verdict on length: Milan’s core is two days, three at a stretch. Adding a fourth day of city sights is the commonest mistake in Milan planning, and the day trips guide is where the extra day belongs.
