Madrid Activities Worth Paying For
Madrid will happily sell you a city pass that does not do what the name suggests, and a plate of croquetas at nearly double the going rate, both within a hundred metres of Plaza Mayor. The activities actually worth your money here are cheap: a 3 EUR viewpoint, a 7 EUR bullring tour, a 32.80 EUR card that covers three world-class museums for a year. The expensive mistakes are the ones sold hardest.
The card question, answered before you buy one
The Madrid City Card is a transport pass with a discount booklet attached. It is priced identically to the Abono Turístico because it is the Abono Turístico, plus a voucher leaflet: free entry at most municipal museums, 10 to 30 percent off at private attractions, and no free entry to the Prado, the Reina Sofía, the Thyssen or the Royal Palace. Benefits run one month from purchase while the transport leg only covers the consecutive days you chose. It is sold at city tourist information offices, no reservation needed, and the terms are published on the official City Card page .
The card that does cover the big museums is the Paseo del Arte card at 32.80 EUR: one visit each to the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen, permanent collections plus some temporary shows, valid a full year from purchase. Three separate admissions come to about 41 EUR, so the saving is real but modest, and resellers add roughly 5 EUR for the identical product. Buy it on any of the three museums’ own sites .
Is the Mercado de San Miguel worth it?
As a building, yes, for about half an hour. As dinner, no. The 1916 wrought-iron market hall is genuinely handsome and the pricing is tourist-zone pricing, so treat it as a look and one small plate rather than a meal.

Eat instead at Mercado de San Fernando in Lavapiés, a working municipal market since 1944, or Mercado de la Cebada in La Latina.
Tapas: Ponzano beats Cava Baja on most nights
Cava Baja is the famous one, roughly 300 metres with more than 50 bars along it, and it is good: Casa Lucas, Casa Julio for croquetas, Txakolina, Juana La Loca. It is also the street every guide sends people to, so counter space is gone by 20:00.
Calle Ponzano in Chamberí is where the argument is currently settled. More than 70 bars, Fide, El Doble, La Máquina de Chamberí and Sala de Despiece among them, and still barely covered in English. Guided Madrid tapas crawls run both streets, which is worth it mainly for the ordering rather than the walking.
Las Ventas without attending a bullfight
Bullfighting in Madrid is legal, active and genuinely divisive, and the bullring has a door that does not involve a corrida. The Museo Taurino is free, capacity-limited, and the Las Ventas Tour costs 7 EUR for about 50 minutes with an audio guide in eight languages, covering the Puerta de Cuadrillas, the chapel, the infirmary corridor, the callejón and the ring floor itself. Hours run 10:00 to 19:00 from May to October with last entry at 18:15, and 10:00 to 18:00 from November to April with last entry at 17:30. If you do want a corrida: the season runs roughly 22 March to October, with the Feria de San Isidro from 8 May to 7 June 2026 and the Corrida de Beneficencia on 14 June. Seats are priced by sun and shade and by distance, from about 25 EUR in the andanada at the back to past 120 EUR in the front rows, and 300 to 400 EUR for barrera seats at the big fights. The 1929 neo-Mudéjar building stands up as architecture on its own.
Craft beer and vermut, priced honestly
Be Hoppy at Calle Hortaleza 90 in Chueca is a real craft-beer bar with 14 taps, and it is a bar rather than a branded tour. Generic craft-beer crawls through Malasaña do exist through the aggregators at roughly 40 to 60 EUR per person for three hours, which is a lot of money for four beers you could order yourself.
La hora del vermut costs nothing to schedule and is the better ritual: roughly 12:00 to 14:00, vermouth poured from the barrel over ice with an orange twist and an olive. Bodega de la Ardosa in Malasaña has been doing it since 1892.
Cooking classes and market tours
The format is stable and the operators churn. A typical session is three to four hours: a morning shop at a market, then a paella or tapas cook-along. Book a Madrid cooking class on the strength of recent reviews rather than a school name you read somewhere, because the specific businesses in this segment turn over fast.
The cheapest good view in the centre
Mirador Madrid, on the eighth floor of the Palacio de Cibeles, costs 3 EUR, or 2 EUR reduced, free for under-sixes. It works on timed 30-minute slots capped around 50 people and closes on Mondays. CentroCentro downstairs is free and carries a permanent exhibition on the 1919 Antonio Palacios post-office building itself. Both rooftop bars in the centre charge more and pour drinks; this one just has the fountain directly below it.
El Rastro, and the pickpocket reality
Sundays and public holidays only, roughly 09:00 to 15:00, spread through La Latina around Calle Ribera de Curtidores and Plaza de Cascorro. More than 700 stalls, about 100,000 visitors a week, free to browse, and one of the highest-density pickpocket spots in Madrid alongside Sol, Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor and Atocha. The current street scams are fake petitions and bracelet-tying followed by a demand for payment.

Staying central matters more than staying cheap here, because the Metro stops at 01:30, so compare rates in La Latina and Huertas before you book out by the ring road.
Book the Las Ventas tour for a Monday. The Prado closes on no weekday but the Thyssen only opens 12:00 to 16:00 on Mondays and the Reina Sofía shuts on Tuesdays, so Monday is the day Madrid’s museum plan falls apart and the bullring’s does not.
