Day Trips From Seoul and Busan, Korea
The honest limit on a South Korean day trip is rail geography, not ambition. Anything reachable inside an hour or two by KTX or subway fits comfortably; Jeju Island, 450km south across the water, does not, no matter how the flight schedule looks on paper.
From Seoul: Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a half day
Subway Line 1 reaches Suwon Station in about 45 minutes for 1,900 won, or KTX covers it in 30. Hwaseong Fortress , an 18th-century structure built by King Jeongjo, is encircled by 5.7km of intact stone walls, artillery bastions and the Buksumun watergate. Walking the perimeter is free; the Hwaseong Eochea tourist trolley costs 4,000 won, and traditional Korean archery at Yeonmudae runs 2,000 won for 10 arrows.
From Seoul: Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm, a full day
The ITX-Cheongchun train runs from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong Station in 40 to 55 minutes for 6,900 won, connecting to a Gapyeong City Tour Bus day pass at 8,000 won. Nami Island’s ferry-inclusive entry is 16,000 won for foreign adults, or cross by the 80-meter zip-wire over the Han River for 49,900 won. From Seoul: Bukhansan National Park, a half day
Take Subway Line 3 to Gupabal Station, then Bus 704 to the Bukhansanseong fortress entrance. The climb to Baegundae Peak at 836m crosses the old fortress gate and scrambles up granite slabs with wire-rope railings, taking 3 to 4 hours round trip. Trail conditions are posted on the Korea National Park Service site ; sturdy shoes matter here, since the granite gets slick after rain.
From Busan: Gyeongju, a full day and fast by rail
KTX from Busan Station to Singyeongju Station takes 28 to 32 minutes, from around 11,000 won one-way depending on train and time. From Singyeongju, Express Bus 700 reaches Bulguksa Temple, or Bus 50/51 reaches the Daereungwon Royal Tombs downtown. Renting an electric scooter or bicycle for 15,000 won a day is the easiest way to string together Cheomseongdae, the 7th-century observatory (free), and Wolji Pond, where the illuminated pavilions reflect on the water after dark; there is no boating on the pond itself, only a perimeter walk.
From Busan: Tongyeong, a full day
Intercity coaches from Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal reach Tongyeong in about 1.5 hours for around 12,000 won. The Tongyeong Cable Car climbs Mount Mireuksan (17,000 won return) with views over the 150-plus islands of Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park, and the Skyline Luge Tongyeong nearby runs 30,000 won for three rides. The verdict
