Uzbekistan’s oldest commercial winery, founded by merchant Dmitry Filatov and enologist Mikhail Khovrenko, still runs tours through its original brick vaulted cellars, past dust-coated bottles dating to the 1900 Paris Exposition. A guided tasting of 8 to 10 local wines, including the sweet fortified Yulduz and Shirin and the aged Filatov brandy, runs roughly 120,000-180,000 UZS ($9-$14) per person. Dinner under the plane trees
Restaurant Platan sits in a garden of centuries-old plane trees and serves grilled lamb shashlik, baked trout, and local wine in a setting built for a slow dinner rather than a quick one. Samarkand Restaurant on Alisher Navoi Street offers the opposite mood: ornate carved ganch plaster, silk suzani tapestries, live traditional string music, and private dining alcoves for couples who want a bit more formality.
A courtyard to stay in
The Old Town’s converted 19th-century Jewish merchant mansions, Hotel Dilshoda and Jahongir Guest House among them, have carved wooden verandas overlooking rose-garden courtyards, a different register from the large modern hotels near the station.
