Samarkand in Three Days, or Five
Two full days covers the monumental core of Samarkand thoroughly. A third day for Shakhrisabz, or two more for a run to Bukhara, is what turns a stopover into a proper trip.
Day 1: The Timurid spine
Start at 08:30 at Gur-e-Amir, when the light on its 64-fluted turquoise dome is softest, then walk to Registan Square for the three madrasahs; budget 90 minutes minimum. Lunch at Osh Markazi for layered Samarkand plov, then follow the pedestrian Islam Karimov Promenade to Bibi-Khanym Mosque and on into Siab Bazaar. Close the day at Hazrat Khizr Mosque for the sunset view over the valley, then return to Registan after dark, when the facades are lit amber and turquoise until 23:00, free from the amphitheater steps. Day 2: Shrines, ruins, and artisans
08:00 at Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis, best in the morning when the turquoise tilework catches direct light (the whole historic center carries UNESCO World Heritage status; see the official inscription ). From there, the Afrasiab Archaeological Museum holds the 7th-century Sogdian frescoes of King Varkhuman receiving Chinese envoys, and the Ulugh Beg Observatory preserves the excavated trench of his 40-meter meridian sextant. Spend the afternoon at the Konigil watermill paper mill for a hands-on demonstration, and close with a tasting at the historic Khovrenko Winery, established 1868.
Day 3: Shakhrisabz over the pass
A private car crosses the Takhta-Karacha Pass (1,675m) through the Zarafshan Range to Shakhrisabz, 85 km and roughly two hours south. Ak-Saray Palace’s surviving 38-meter pylons, the Kok-Gumbaz Mosque, and Dorus Saodat, Timur’s family crypt, fill the day; roasted mountain lamb at a pass-road stall makes a good lunch stop before the drive back.
Extending to five days: on to Bukhara
Day 4: Board the Afrosiyob bullet train, roughly 09:45 departure, for the 1 hour 30 minute run to Bukhara (about 110,000 UZS). Tickets sell out 3-4 weeks ahead in high season, and the booking window opens 45 days before departure at eticket.railway.uz , so reserve before finalizing this leg. Spend the afternoon at the Po-i-Kalyan complex and the Ark fortress.
Day 5: Visit the 9th-century Samanid Mausoleum and the four-minaret Chor Minor before an onward Afrosiyob train or domestic flight.
