The building
The result of six centuries of work is the third-largest cathedral in the world: 135 spires, roughly 3,400 statues, and a 157-metre marble Gothic nave with 52 columns rising 45 metres. The gold-plated Madonnina statue tops the highest spire at 108 metres and was, for most of the city’s history, an unofficial height limit; no Milanese building was meant to stand taller than her, a rule that modern towers have since broken in practice if not in sentiment. What is inside worth seeing?
The 55 stained glass windows, some dating to the 15th century, are the interior’s real draw, filling the nave with colour on a sunny morning. Below the cathedral floor, the Battistero Paleocristiano holds 4th-century ruins of the baptistery where Saint Ambrose baptised Saint Augustine in 387 CE, one of the oldest Christian structures in northern Italy, and one that most visitors walk straight past.
Is Piazza del Duomo worth lingering in?
Yes, particularly early. At 7am, before the crowds and the pigeon-feeders arrive, the piazza is a genuinely different place than it is at noon in July. The equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II sits in front of the facade, and the adjoining Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, opened in 1877, is one of Europe’s finest glass-and-iron shopping arcades.
The Duomo Museum
Housed beside the cathedral, the museum holds sculptures, stained glass and models tracing the building’s near six-century construction. It is included in the combo rooftop ticket but also sold separately for visitors who want the history without the climb.
