Milan Day Trips in 2 Days (No Filler)

Two days, one city orientation day and one real day trip: Lake Como, the fastest and most rewarding option from Milan for the time invested. This is not a full Milan itinerary; the 2 day city itinerary covers the Duomo, Last Supper and Castello Sforzesco properly if that is what you actually want. For more day trips stacked onto this same base, see the 3 day plan and beyond.
Book these before you go
- Reserve Duomo rooftop tickets , timed entry, dress code enforced at the door
- Book a guided Lake Como and Bellagio day trip if you would rather skip the DIY train and ferry
- Check hotel rates near Milano Centrale , the platform every day trip in this plan starts from
The 2-day plan
| Day | Focus | Travel time from Milan |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Milan orientation: Duomo rooftop, Galleria | none, you start here |
| Day 2 | Lake Como (Varenna + Bellagio) | ~65 min train, ~15 min ferry |
Day 1: Land in Milan and do the essential three hours
Check into a hotel near Milano Centrale rather than deep in Brera; every day trip in this plan starts from that platform, and the time saved on early trains adds up over a trip. Drop your bags and head straight for the Duomo rooftop, EUR 16 by the 251 stairs or EUR 18 by lift, timed entry, dress code enforced at the door. Come down through the free Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II toward La Scala, then call it a day. This is not a full Milan city day, it is the launchpad for tomorrow’s train.
Day 2: Lake Como, the day trip that justifies the whole plan
Catch an early Trenord train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino, about 65 minutes, roughly EUR 7.40 one way, departing close to hourly. Bellagio has no train station of its own, a detail that catches first-timers out; Varenna is the actual rail gateway. Walk 10 minutes downhill to the ferry pier and cross to Bellagio in about 15 minutes for roughly EUR 5. Spend the day between the two: Varenna’s quieter lakefront and the Castello di Vezio above it, Bellagio’s postcard grid of stepped lanes. lakecomo.is has current opening times for both if you want to check before you go. A day ferry pass, about EUR 16.90, pays off if you add a third town like Menaggio. Back in Milan by dinner, budget roughly EUR 25 to 40 per person for the whole day including train, ferry and lunch.
Is 2 days enough to use Milan as a day-trip base?
Barely, and only for one trip. Two days covers a compressed Milan orientation and a single full day trip, Lake Como in this plan, but leaves no room for Bergamo, Verona or a second lake. Treat this as a taste of the day-trip-base idea, not the satisfying version of it; the 3 day plan adds a second trip and reads as the more complete minimum.
Lake Como or Lake Maggiore for a single lake day?
Lake Como. It is faster from Milan, the Varenna-to-Bellagio hop is one short ferry crossing rather than an island-hopping day, and the scenery reads as more iconic for the time spent getting there. Lake Maggiore is the better pick only if palace gardens matter to you more than lakeside village charm, which is a real but less common preference.
Do I need to book the Lake Como ferry in advance?
No. Ferries between Varenna and Bellagio run continuously through the day, and tickets are sold dockside or online same-day with no sell-out risk the way the Last Supper has. The only real time pressure is catching an early enough train out of Milan so you are not still on the lake when the last useful train back to the city departs.
Two days is a sampler, not the plan most day-trippers actually want. If Bergamo or Verona is tempting you toward a third day, the 3 day Milan day trip plan is built around exactly that, and keeps this Day 1 and Day 2 intact rather than starting over.
