Zermatt 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Six days is our 5-day plan plus a genuine cross-border day: the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing to Cervinia, Italy, or a full ski day if the mountain crossing doesn’t interest you. Treat whichever you pick as a single-purpose day, not an add-on to Gornergrat or Glacier Paradise. Our 7-day itinerary adds a genuine rest day on top of this one.

Day 1: Arrival and the free half of Zermatt

There’s no driving into the village itself. Arrive by train, or park at Täsch and take the Zermatt Shuttle the last 12 minutes for CHF 8.60 one-way. Walk to Kirchbrücke for the free Matterhorn view, then Hinterdorf’s blackened 17th-century barns.

Day 2: Gornergrat, the day this trip is built around

Take the earliest departure available. A return runs CHF 96 winter, CHF 132 summer; check the full fare table first. Allow two hours up top for the 3,089m panorama.

Day 3: Sunnegga and the Five Lakes Walk

The Sunnegga funicular reaches 2,288m in four minutes, connecting to the Fünfseenweg, an easy 2.5-hour walk to Stellisee for the Matterhorn reflection. A Sunnegga return runs roughly CHF 25.

Day 4: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

The multi-stage cable car reaches 3,883m, Europe’s highest cable car station. A return runs CHF 104-132 depending on season; check current fares before buying. Ascend slowly, under-3s are barred from the final stage.

Day 5: Gorner Gorge and a genuine rest day

Gorner Gorge is a short walkway through 220-million-year-old glacial rock, CHF 5.50 adult, cash only. Pair it with the Mountaineers’ Cemetery, roughly 50 graves of climbers lost since the 1865 first ascent.

Day 6: Cervinia, Italy, or a ski day

Option A, the Cervinia crossing: from the Glacier Paradise summit station, the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing continues over the border to Cervinia via Testa Grigia at 3,480m, the highest cable car border crossing in the Alps. One-way fares run CHF 127.50 winter, CHF 147.50 shoulder, CHF 161.50 peak summer. Bring a passport even though nobody checks it at altitude, and budget the whole day; the multi-stage transfer plus a look around Cervinia eats most of it.

Option B, a ski or glacier-ski day: the combined Zermatt-Cervinia-Valtournenche lift network runs one of the very few same-day international ski safaris anywhere, and the Theodul Glacier sector keeps genuine skiing running through summer too. There’s no flat day-pass rate; pricing runs dynamic from roughly CHF 88 in low-demand weeks, rising sharply on peak dates, so check the current calendar before committing to a date.

Is the Cervinia crossing worth it if you’re not skiing? Yes, as a genuine day trip rather than a novelty add-on. Cervinia is a different village entirely: cheaper food, a view of the Matterhorn’s south face, and noticeably less infrastructure than Zermatt, worth the fare on its own merits, not just for bragging rights about the border.
