Toulouse 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Book these before you go
- Toulouse hotel rates : the centre near Place du Capitole is walkable but priciest.
- Cité de l’Espace: buy online at en.cite-espace.com , €21.50-24.50 by season.
- Carcassonne’s Château Comtal and ramparts: book at reservation.tourisme-carcassonne.fr , €19.50 low season, €24 high season, arrive early to beat the tour-group crowds.
Day 1: Capitole to the Garonne, the pink-brick core
Morning: Place du Capitole and the Capitole itself, free to cross, eight Corinthian columns marking the eight medieval “capitouls.” Then Basilica of Saint-Sernin, the largest surviving Romanesque church in Europe, free nave, €2 for the crypt and ambulatory.
Afternoon: The Jacobins, €5, the “palmier” vault fanning a single column into 22 ribs overhead. Lunch at Marché Victor Hugo.
Evening: Sunset on the Pont Neuf, Toulouse’s oldest bridge despite the name. Dinner built around cassoulet made with saucisse de Toulouse, roughly €20-30.
Day 2: Cité de l’Espace and the Canal du Midi
Morning into afternoon: Cité de l’Espace, a full-scale 55m Ariane 5 replica, a walk-through Mir module, and two planetariums, €24.50 high season or €21.50 low season, budget 3-4 hours.
Evening: The Canal du Midi towpath near the Port de l’Embouchure, free and shaded. Dinner in Carmes-Saint-Étienne.
Day 3: Albi, the red-brick UNESCO city
Transport: TER train from Toulouse-Matabiau, about 50 minutes, €15-25 full fare or €8-12 booked ahead.
Morning: Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile, free nave, €6 combined Grand Chœur and treasury ticket.
Afternoon: Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, €10 adult, the world’s largest public collection of the painter’s work.
Evening: Train back, dinner in Toulouse.
Day 4: Carcassonne, the walled citadel
Transport: Direct train, 40 minutes to just over an hour.
Morning into afternoon: The Château Comtal and ramparts, a joint ticket covering the archaeological museum too, €19.50 low season or €24 high season. Go early, the double-walled Cité gets crowded fast after mid-morning.
Evening: Train back to Toulouse, or an early dinner in the Cité itself before the return.
Is 4 days enough for Toulouse?
Four days is enough to do both UNESCO day trips properly, Albi and Carcassonne, without turning either into a rushed half-visit, plus the full city core and Cité de l’Espace. It’s not enough to add the Aeroscopia and Airbus aerospace day on top; our 5-day itinerary folds that in as well.
