Nairobi: 6 Days With Lake Nakuru

Safety note: Nairobi has real street crime, mugging, carjacking, and smash-and-grab at traffic lights, plus a background terrorism risk, alongside millions of trouble-free visits a year. Use Uber, Bolt, or Little rather than walking, stay in Westlands, Karen, Gigiri, Kilimani, or Lavington rather than the CBD after dark, and check your government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Six days is enough to route through Lake Nakuru on the way to a proper multi-night Maasai Mara stay, rather than treating the Mara as a rushed add-on. Apply for Kenya’s eTA at etakenya.go.ke well ahead, around $30 and roughly 72-hour processing.
Day 1: Arrival and Nairobi National Park
Arrange your airport transfer in advance rather than using unlicensed touts at arrivals, then settle in before an afternoon game drive at Nairobi National Park, around $80/adult non-resident (verify current KWS rate). Lions, black rhino, buffalo, and zebra are common; elephants aren’t resident here, the park’s only wildlife corridor runs south into the Kitengela area. Tip for the day: arrange a driver-guide through your hotel rather than self-driving.
Day 2: The elephant nursery and the Karen loop
Book the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s 11am-noon window well ahead, around $20/person, then spend the afternoon in Karen: the Giraffe Centre, around KES 1,500, and the Karen Blixen Museum. Tip for the day: book the Sheldrick slot from home before you travel, it’s genuinely oversubscribed by the time you land.
Day 3: Drive to Lake Nakuru
Drive roughly 3.5-4 hours to Lake Nakuru National Park, a strong rhino sanctuary with roughly 150 resident rhinos, though its once-famous flamingo flocks have thinned in recent years as birds shifted toward Lake Bogoria, worth knowing before you go in expecting a guaranteed pink lake. Spend the afternoon on a game drive. Tip for the day: pack a picnic lunch or arrange one through your lodge, options directly in the park are limited.
Day 4: Onward to the Maasai Mara
Continue by road to the Maasai Mara, roughly a further few hours’ drive from Nakuru, or backtrack toward Nairobi for a Wilson Airport flight if your route favors it. Arrive in time for an evening game drive. Tip for the day: if your trip overlaps late July through September, this is peak Great Migration season for the Mara River crossings.
Day 5: A full day in the Mara
Spend the day on game drives, with an early start for the best predator activity. Tip for the day: bring a warm layer for early-morning drives, temperatures drop noticeably before sunrise even this close to the equator.
Day 6: Return to Nairobi and departure
Fly or drive back to Nairobi with time to spare before your international flight, budgeting real time for Nairobi’s traffic on the way to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Tip for the day: leave at least three hours before an international departure, security and check-in both take longer than the schedule suggests.
