Nairobi: 4 Days With A Mara Add-On

Safety note: Nairobi has real street crime, mugging, carjacking, and smash-and-grab at traffic lights, plus a background terrorism risk, alongside millions of trouble-free visits a year. Use Uber, Bolt, or Little rather than walking, stay in Westlands, Karen, Gigiri, Kilimani, or Lavington rather than the CBD after dark, and check your government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Four days is the point where a Maasai Mara extension starts making real sense: two days for the city’s essentials, two for a proper taste of the Mara. Apply for Kenya’s eTA at etakenya.go.ke well ahead, around $30 and roughly 72-hour processing.
Day 1: Nairobi National Park and the elephant nursery
Book the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s 11am-noon window before you travel, it fills up weeks ahead and only direct bookings through the Trust’s own site count, around $20/person. Follow with an afternoon game drive at Nairobi National Park, around $80/adult non-resident (verify current KWS rate), where lions, black rhino, buffalo, and zebra are common but elephants aren’t resident here, the park’s only wildlife corridor runs south into the Kitengela area. Tip for the day: arrange a driver-guide through your hotel rather than self-driving, the park’s bush is dense enough that local knowledge of sightings matters.
Day 2: The Karen loop and Bomas of Kenya
Spend the morning in Karen: hand-feed giraffes at the Giraffe Centre, around KES 1,500, and tour the Karen Blixen Museum, the 1912 farmhouse where the “Out of Africa” author lived until 1931. In the afternoon, head to Bomas of Kenya for the live cultural dance and acrobatics show, an easy pairing given its location just past the park’s main gate. Tip for the day: confirm Bomas’ current showtime before you go, it shifts between roughly 2:30pm on weekdays and later on weekends.
Day 3: Fly or drive to the Maasai Mara
Transfer to Wilson Airport, Nairobi’s dedicated domestic and safari-charter airport, distinct from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, for a roughly 45-minute flight to the Mara, or budget 5-6 hours if driving. Spend the afternoon on your first game drive; if your trip overlaps late July through September, this is peak Great Migration season for the Mara River crossings. Tip for the day: budget real transfer time between JKIA (if you’re arriving internationally that same day) and Wilson, they’re different airports across town from each other.
Day 4: A full day in the Mara, then return
Spend the day on further game drives before heading back to Nairobi by evening flight or an early departure by road. Tip for the day: if your flight home is the next morning, an overnight in Nairobi rather than a same-day Mara-to-international-flight connection is the safer, more realistic plan given Nairobi’s traffic.
