Montreal 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. Book or buy through them and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only point you to things we would actually use.
Four days is our 3-day itinerary (Old Montreal, Mount Royal, downtown, Jean-Talon Market) with a fourth day given entirely to the east end: Olympic Park and the Space for Life museum cluster. This is also, honestly, about where the city core runs out, our 5-day itinerary goes deeper on neighborhoods rather than adding a fifth must-see.

Day 1: Old Montreal and the Old Port
Morning: Old Montreal, free to wander, Rue Saint-Paul to Place Jacques-Cartier, then Notre-Dame Basilica (about $16 daytime), the blue-and-gold interior tells the story of the city’s founding.
Afternoon: The Old Port: La Grande Roue (about $29.50) or Pointe-à-Callière (about $29, closed Mondays), built over the 1642 founding site.
Evening: AURA at Notre-Dame (about $33.50, combo from ~$45). Dinner in Old Montreal, remember the 14.975% sales tax and an 18-20% tip.
Day 2: Mount Royal, Plateau, and Mile End
Morning: Mount Royal, Olmsted’s design, Kondiaronk Belvedere free lookout, and St Joseph’s Oratory nearby, Canada’s largest church, free shrine.
Afternoon: The Plateau and Mile End, murals and row houses, free to wander.
Evening: Fairmount Bagel (1919) and St-Viateur Bagel (1957) a block apart, then Schwartz’s Deli’s smoked meat (since 1928).
Day 3: Downtown, the RÉSO, and Jean-Talon Market
Morning: The RÉSO underground city, roughly 33 kilometers of tunnels, a genuine winter lifeline, plus Sainte-Catherine Street and Quartier des Spectacles above ground.
Afternoon: The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), about $31, free for 25 and under.
Evening: Jean-Talon Market in Little Italy, one of North America’s largest open-air markets, graze rather than sit down.
Day 4: Olympic Park and Space for Life
Morning: Head east to Olympic Park. The Montreal Tower’s observation deck is closed for renovation until around spring 2027, so don’t plan around going up it, the grounds themselves are still worth the visit.
Afternoon: Space for Life is four museums together: the Biodôme recreates four ecosystems of the Americas, the Botanical Garden is one of the world’s great gardens with distinct Chinese and Japanese sections (autumn brings the Gardens of Light lantern festival), plus the Insectarium and Planétarium. A combo pass runs about $55-65, check current pricing since it moves.
Evening: A last dinner back downtown or in the Plateau, whichever neighborhood you haven’t eaten your way through yet.
Is 4 days enough for Montreal?
Four days comfortably covers the city core, Old Montreal, Mount Royal, downtown, and the Olympic Park cluster, with room to actually eat well along the way. Past day 4, the postcard sights are genuinely done: our 5-day itinerary and beyond go deeper on neighborhoods rather than inventing a fifth marquee stop, and says so honestly rather than padding the plan.
