Maldives 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Six nights is enough to add something genuinely distinctive, Fuvahmulah’s tiger sharks or Addu’s equator crossing, on top of the core reef and excursion days, still one base for most of the trip.
Day 1
Arrive at Velana International Airport, IMUGA filed ahead, free 30-day visa at immigration. Transfer to your base by speedboat, domestic flight plus speedboat, or seaplane (roughly $290-700+ round trip, daylight-only, roughly 6am-4:30pm). Tip: a six-night stay is long enough to justify a farther, seaplane-only atoll, just build a same-day buffer for the daylight cutoff.
Day 2
A full house reef day. Tip: ask your resort what its house reef looked like before and after the 2024 bleaching event, honest resorts will tell you straight.
Day 3
The signature excursion: Hanifaru mantas (Baa Atoll, roughly June-November) or South Ari whale sharks (year-round), or a sandbank picnic if neither applies. Tip: book this before you land in season.
Day 4
A second water activity: a kandu or wreck dive, or a surf session at Thulusdhoo (roughly March-October). Tip: real dive insurance matters here, most atolls have no decompression chamber and evacuation for a dive injury can run $10,000-34,000.
Day 5
The far-south add-on, if your base allows it: Fuvahmulah for tiger-shark diving (a resident population of 400+ adults) or Addu/Gan for the equator crossing and WWII British RAF-base history plus the British Loyalty wreck. If a far-south add-on isn’t practical from your base, substitute a local-island contrast day, Maafushi or a nearby guesthouse island, no alcohol, modest dress, a marked bikini beach. Tip: a far-south add-on usually means an extra domestic flight leg, confirm timing before you commit to it.
Day 6
A relaxed final day, a last reef swim or spa morning, then transfer back with buffer time before departure. Tip: reconfirm your return transfer the night before.
Book these before you go:
- A Maldives sandbank and snorkel or dive day tour : the real sell-out risk in the November-April peak
- A Maafushi guesthouse : book ahead if you’re adding a local-island day
Real costs: resort track roughly $4,000-10,000+ for five nights all-in, more with a far-south flight leg; Maafushi-based track roughly $500-800 for five nights plus excursions.
Shorter: the 5-day itinerary and earlier. Longer: the 7-day itinerary stretches the water days further.
