Maldives 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Five nights builds on the 4-night floor with a real second water activity, still one base, still a settle-in trip, not a tour.
Day 1
Arrive at Velana International Airport, IMUGA declaration already filed, free 30-day visa at immigration. Transfer to your base: speedboat (roughly $100-250 round trip) near Malé, or a domestic flight plus speedboat or the seaplane (roughly $290-700+ round trip, daylight-only, roughly 6am-4:30pm) for a farther atoll. Tip: build a buffer into your flight timing if a seaplane leg is involved, missing the daylight window means an airport-hotel night first.
Day 2
A full house reef day, snorkeling or diving off the beach, or Maafushi’s bikini beach and a booked snorkel trip. Tip: ask about your reef’s post-2024 bleaching recovery before you assume it’s pristine, some resorts run active restoration, worth knowing either way.
Day 3
The signature excursion: Hanifaru Bay mantas in Baa Atoll (roughly June-November, about $125, snorkel-only, ranger-supervised) or South Ari whale sharks (roughly $60-250, year-round), or a sandbank picnic if neither fits. Tip: book ahead in season, these trips fill fast.
Day 4
A second water activity: a kandu or wreck dive (Fotteyo Kandu or a wreck like the British Loyalty if you’re far south), a surf session at Thulusdhoo if you’re in North Malé Atoll (roughly March-October), or a local-island day visit if you’re resort-based and want the contrast, no alcohol sold, modest dress off the beach, a marked bikini beach only. Tip: if diving, confirm dive insurance covers evacuation, most atolls have no decompression chamber.
Day 5
A relaxed final morning, spa or one last reef swim, then transfer back with buffer time before departure. Tip: reconfirm your return transfer the night before, boats and seaplanes run fixed schedules, not yours.
Book these before you go:
- A Maldives sandbank and snorkel or dive day tour : the real sell-out risk on day 3, especially November-April
- A Maafushi guesthouse : book ahead for nights on the budget track
Real costs: resort track roughly $3,000-8,000 for four nights all-in; Maafushi track roughly $400-650 for four nights plus excursions.
Shorter: 4 days , 3 days , 2 days . Longer: 6 days , 7 days .
