Málaga: 7-Day Itinerary
A week is enough to do Málaga’s city core and every one of its marquee day trips. Five straight day trips is ambitious, so feel free to swap any one for a slow city day. Base near María Zambrano station for the train trips. The C-1 Cercanías train links the airport and centre in about 12 minutes (verify fare).
Day 1: The old town and the Moorish hilltop
Climb the Alcazaba (around 3.50 EUR alone; combined ticket with Gibralfaro better value, verify) and the Castillo de Gibralfaro, then the free Roman Theatre below. Lunch at the Atarazanas Market, then the Cathedral (La Manquita) and the old town.
Tip: book the Alhambra (day 3) and the Caminito del Rey (day 7) today; both cap numbers and sell out.
Day 2: Picasso, the port and espetos
Do the Museo Picasso Málaga (around 13 EUR, verify) and the Casa Natal birthplace, then the Centre Pompidou (around 9 EUR, verify). Walk Soho’s murals, then head east to Pedregalejo or El Palo for espetos at a chiringuito.
Tip: taste the sweet Málaga wine at Antigua Casa de Guardia (1840), poured from the barrel.
Day 3: Day trip to Granada
Travel to Granada, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The Alhambra carries a timed entry to the Nasrid Palaces (entry around 19 EUR, verify); add the Generalife and the Albaicín.
Tip: reach the Nasrid Palaces entrance early, since the timed slot is strict.
Day 4: Day trip to Córdoba
Take the AVE to Córdoba, around 50 minutes to an hour. The Mezquita and its roughly 850 arches is the highlight (around 13 EUR, verify), then the old Jewish quarter and Roman bridge.
Tip: enter the Mezquita in the first opening hour to beat the tour groups.
Day 5: Day trip to Seville
Travel to Seville; there is no direct non-stop AVE, so expect one change and roughly 1h56 to 2h18. See the Alcázar royal palace, the Cathedral with its Giralda tower, and the Plaza de España.
Tip: book the Alcázar online in advance; its on-the-day queues are long in season.
Day 6: Day trip to Ronda
Take the scenic train or bus to Ronda, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The Puente Nuevo over the El Tajo gorge (built 1751 to 1793) is the centrepiece; the bridge is free, with small entries for the bullring museum and Arab baths.
Tip: shoot the bridge from the gorge-side viewpoint below the town, not just from the road above.
Day 7: El Caminito del Rey
Head to El Caminito del Rey, about an hour by road, a 2.9km cliff-face boardwalk over 100m above the river in the Gaitanes gorge. It is linear and one-way, so plan the shuttle back, then return to Málaga.
Tip: if you fly out today, the Caminito is too tight to risk; swap in a slow morning at the Atarazanas Market and a Cercanías run to the airport instead.
