Málaga: 5-Day Itinerary
Five days covers the city core and three of the best day trips: Granada, Córdoba and the coast at Nerja. Base near María Zambrano station for easy train access, or the historic centre if you value walkability. The C-1 Cercanías train links the airport and centre in about 12 minutes (verify fare).
Day 1: The Moorish hilltop and Roman layers
Climb the Alcazaba (around 3.50 EUR alone; combined ticket with Gibralfaro better value, verify) and the Castillo de Gibralfaro for the panorama, then visit the free Roman Theatre below. Lunch at the Atarazanas Market, then the Cathedral (La Manquita) and the old town in the afternoon.
Tip: book your Alhambra tickets for day 3 before anything else on this trip; they cap daily numbers and sell out days or weeks ahead.
Day 2: Picasso, the port and espetos
Do the Museo Picasso Málaga (around 13 EUR, verify) and the nearby Casa Natal birthplace, then the waterfront Centre Pompidou (around 9 EUR, verify). Lunch on the port, explore Soho’s murals, and finish the day east at Pedregalejo or El Palo with espetos at a chiringuito.
Tip: for the sweet Málaga wine, stop at Antigua Casa de Guardia (1840), poured straight from the barrel.
Day 3: Day trip to Granada and the Alhambra
Travel to Granada, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours (verify the direct service). The Alhambra is a Nasrid palace-and-fortress complex, UNESCO-listed since 1984, with the famous carved courtyards and water features. Your ticket carries a timed entry to the Nasrid Palaces, so plan the day around it (entry around 19 EUR, verify). Add the Generalife gardens and, with time, the Albaicín quarter.
Tip: arrive well before your Nasrid Palaces slot; miss the timed window and you are not let in.
Day 4: Day trip to Córdoba
Take the AVE to Córdoba, commonly around 50 minutes to an hour. The Mezquita and its forest of roughly 850 red-and-white arches is the highlight (entry around 13 EUR, verify), followed by the old Jewish quarter and the Roman bridge. Return to Málaga in the evening.
Tip: go into the Mezquita in the first opening hour to beat the tour groups.
Day 5: Nerja and Frigiliana
Head east to Nerja, about 45 minutes, for the Cuevas de Nerja caves (entry around 14 EUR, verify; book ahead in season) and the clifftop Balcón de Europa viewpoint. From there, a short bus or taxi reaches Frigiliana, a white village of steep, flower-lined lanes. Have a terrace lunch before the bus back.
Tip: the caves and the village pair well in a day, but check the last bus back from Frigiliana before you settle in for a long lunch.
