Luxor Egypt Day Trips: 7 Day Itinerary

Seven days is the full gateway list at a comfortable pace: the balloon and Dendera and Abydos from Luxor, a 4 night Nile cruise through the Esna Lock, Edfu, and Kom Ombo to Aswan, and a buffer day back in Luxor before you fly home instead of rushing straight to the airport. It’s the same spine as our 6 day plan with one day added at the end, not a different trip.

Day 1: the dawn balloon and getting oriented

Arrive in Luxor the evening before this trip starts. The balloon lifts off before sunrise from a dedicated West Bank airfield, 45-60 minutes over the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple, and the green Nile-side fields, for roughly $40-100 per person. Book ahead; flights are grounded outright in wind. A 2013 crash killed 19 people here, the deadliest hot air ballooning disaster on record, and regulation tightened hard afterward, a dedicated airfield, capped simultaneous flights, mandatory extra pilot training. It’s regarded as safe today, not risk-free.

Day 2: Dendera and Abydos

Abydos sits 2.5-3 hours from Luxor via the Qena road, Dendera about an hour; most operators visit Abydos first, then Dendera on the way back, 9-10 hours round trip. Dendera’s entrance runs roughly EGP 300 adult, 150 student, plus small EGP 100 add-ons for the roof and crypt. A private car and driver for the full day runs EGP 1,500-2,500, roughly $30-50.

Day 3: boarding the Nile cruise

Standard Luxor-Aswan cruises run 3 nights/4 days or 4 nights/5 days over roughly 230km of river, with the extra time on the longer sailing spent moored at Edfu and Kom Ombo. 2026 pricing spans budget $350-600 for 3 nights and $450-800 for 4, deluxe $650-1,900, luxury boats $1,200-3,000-plus per person; cabin and full board are usually included, entrance fees and tips usually aren’t. Board this afternoon; expect an evening departure toward the Esna Lock.

Day 4: the Esna Lock and Edfu

The Esna Lock, about 30 miles south of Luxor, is a genuine on-deck spectacle: a concrete chamber that raises or lowers the ship roughly 8 meters over a 30-60 minute transit, with rope-and-basket vendors selling goods up to the deck while you’re locked in. Stay on deck for it. The ship continues to Edfu, where a shore excursion covers the Temple of Horus, EGP 550 adult, before sailing on toward Kom Ombo overnight.

Day 5: Kom Ombo, arriving in Aswan

Kom Ombo’s double temple of Sobek and Haroeris, EGP 450 adult, is a short stop before the ship reaches Aswan in the afternoon. With two full days ahead in Aswan, there’s no need to rush; save the sightseeing for tomorrow and use the evening for a first look at the town from the deck.

Day 6: a full Aswan day and disembarking

Give Aswan its own full day: Philae Temple on Agilkia Island by motorboat, the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk still cracked in its ancient granite quarry, and a Nubian village visit if there’s time, commonly bundled into a single 6-8 hour tour. Check egymonuments.com for current ticket status. Disembark in the evening; this is the one night of the trip not spent in a Luxor hotel or a cruise cabin, so book an Aswan room for it separately.

Day 7: back to Luxor and departure

Transfer back to Luxor overland, 3-4 hours by road, or fly out of Aswan directly if your ticket allows it; check which before you book the Aswan hotel for day six. If you’re routing through Luxor, this buffer day covers delays, a last look at the corniche, and a flight you actually have time to make, rather than connecting straight off the cruise.

Is seven days too long for the Luxor gateway trip?

Not for this list. Seven days is what it actually takes to do the balloon, both temple stops folded into a cruise, and Aswan properly instead of as a rushed add-on. Anyone with less time should look at our 5 day or 6 day versions instead, both of which cut the buffer day, not the sights.

Should the extra day go at the start or the end of the trip?

At the end, almost always. A buffer day at the start just delays the balloon by a day for no reason; a buffer day at the end absorbs the one genuinely unpredictable leg of this whole trip, the transfer or flight back from Aswan, without risking a missed connection home.
