Jordan 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Three days is not a Jordan trip either, but it is the shortest version that earns the name: one long day at Petra instead of the two the site deserves, then a night in Wadi Rum, the best pairing the country has. Everyone tells you Petra needs two days. On three days total you do not have that luxury, so this compresses it into one very full day and spends the saving on the desert. Day 1: Land and Drive, Nothing Else
Fly into Queen Alia International outside Amman and get on the road south. Skip sightseeing in the capital this trip; you do not have a spare afternoon and Amman is not going anywhere. The Desert Highway run to Wadi Musa takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. Check into your hotel, eat something simple near the strip, and sleep early. Tomorrow is the day the whole trip is built around.
Day 2: Petra, the Whole Day
Be at the gate at opening. Walk the Siq, the 1.2 kilometre sandstone gorge, before the tour buses arrive; the light is better and so is the silence. The reveal at the end is Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, worth knowing before you photograph it from the same angle as everyone else: it was never a treasury, it is a Nabataean royal tomb facade from the 1st century with no functioning rooms behind it.
Push on to the Royal Tombs along the main street, then, if your legs and your schedule allow it, climb to the Monastery: 800-plus rock-cut steps, 45 minutes to an hour, a facade genuinely bigger than the Treasury with a fraction of the crowd. Skip the horse and camel touts near the entrance; they are pitched as included, then the handler wants 20 to 50 JOD in tips once you are stuck negotiating off the animal. Walk it instead.
Day 3: Wadi Rum, Then Out
Do not skip this for an extra lie-in. Wadi Rum is 1.5 to 2 hours from Petra, roughly 110km, much of it good tarmac with rougher unpaved stretches near the camps, and it is the best pairing this country has: red sand desert, Bedouin camps, and a jeep tour that shows you more in half a day than most people manage in a week of driving. A full-day jeep tour plus overnight camp, dinner and breakfast included, runs roughly 60 to 65 JOD per person all-in; a bare overnight add-on to a shorter tour runs closer to 30 to 40 JOD. From Wadi Rum, it is roughly back up the Desert Highway to Amman for a flight, or south to Aqaba, about an hour away, if your return routes that way instead. Is one Petra day really enough on this itinerary?
Not ideally, no. One day gets the Siq, the Treasury, the Royal Tombs, and the Monastery if your legs cooperate, but it is a compressed version of a site that rewards two full days.
