Jordan 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Two days is not a Jordan trip, it is a Petra trip with a transfer bolted on either end, and pretending otherwise wastes the little time you have. Fly into Amman, drive the roughly 3 hours south, and give the site everything you can manage. Book these before you go
- Jordan Pass , Wanderer or Explorer tier, bought online before you land.
- A Wadi Musa hotel within walking distance of the Visitor Center; the closest rooms sell out in shoulder season.
- A Petra tour or ticket add-on if you would rather not navigate ticket tiers yourself.
Day 1: Land, Transfer, First Look
Land at Queen Alia International outside Amman and get straight in a car. The drive to Wadi Musa runs 2.5 to 3 hours on the Desert Highway on a good day, longer with Amman traffic on the way out, so budget the whole morning as transit rather than a formality. A pre-booked fixed-price taxi runs roughly 110 to 180 JOD; curbside meters are unreliable for a run this long, so agree the price before you get in.
Check into your Wadi Musa hotel, then enter Petra in the early afternoon. Walk the Siq slowly, over a kilometre of narrow gorge with rock colours that shift with the light, and sit across from the Treasury for ten minutes once it opens up ahead of you rather than moving straight past it. Push on to the Street of Facades and the Roman Theatre before your legs give out, and skip the Monastery today; it is a serious climb, better tackled fresh in the morning than at the tail end of a travel day.
Day 2: Petra, All of It You Can Manage
Start before 8am, both for the temperature and to beat tour groups to the Monastery trail. It is roughly 800 rock-cut steps, harder than the High Place of Sacrifice climb, and the payoff, a facade larger than the Treasury with almost nobody around at that hour, is the best value-for-effort walk in the country. Do the Monastery first, then the High Place of Sacrifice on the way down if your legs allow it.
In the afternoon, the Petra Museum near the Visitor Center is a genuinely good use of an hour, air-conditioned and well curated. Skip a Dead Sea or Wadi Rum side trip entirely; both are genuinely hours away, and squeezing either in means sacrificing time inside Petra, which is the entire point of the two days you have.
What two days honestly cannot fit
Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and Amman sightseeing all lose out this trip. That is not a failure of planning, it is the arithmetic of a 2 day window against a site that needs a minimum of one full day and rewards two. If a Wadi Rum night matters to you, and it should, the 3 day itinerary is the shortest version that fits one in without gutting Petra itself. Getting the tickets right
Petra tickets for overnight-in-Jordan visitors run 50 JOD for one day, 55 JOD for two, or the flat 90 JOD day-tripper rate if you are not staying overnight in the country. The Jordan Pass, bought online before arrival, waives the roughly 40 JOD visa fee for stays of two nights or more and bundles Petra with Wadi Rum and 40-odd other sites.
