Gdansk 7 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Seven days is our 6-day itinerary (the city core, Solidarity and Westerplatte, Sopot, Malbork, Gdynia, the Hel Peninsula) with a seventh day added for Toruń, the longest reach of the week. Shorter trip? Our 5-day itinerary covers the same core minus Hel and Toruń.

Know before you go
- Pay in złoty, not euros, and decline any DCC/currency-conversion prompt.
- The SKM train uses one ticket across the whole Tricity; validate before boarding.
- Book Malbork and Toruń train tickets a little ahead in peak summer; confirm current timetables before you go.
- Check hotel rates in Gdańsk : a full week is worth comparing weekly-rate deals against nightly ones.
Day 1: The Royal Way and St. Mary’s
Morning: The Golden Gate through ul. Długa into Długi Targ, Neptune’s Fountain, and the Main Town Hall’s 83m tower, a faithful postwar rebuild after the Main Town’s near-total 1945 destruction.
Afternoon: St. Mary’s Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world (confirm current tower access), then ul. Mariacka, the amber street.
Evening: The Crane on the Motława waterfront at dusk.
Day 2: Solidarity and Westerplatte
Morning: The European Solidarity Centre at the former shipyard, the August 1980 strikes and the Gdańsk Agreement, plus the 1970 shipyard workers’ monument.
Afternoon: Westerplatte, where the first shots of WWII were fired at 04:48 on 1 September 1939.
Evening: A relaxed dinner back in the Main Town.
Day 3: Sopot, a beach afternoon by SKM
Morning: The SKM reaches Sopot in roughly 20-30 minutes, for the Molo pier, roughly 511 meters, and the Crooked House.
Afternoon: Sopot’s beach.
Evening: Back to Gdańsk by SKM.
Day 4: Malbork Castle
Morning: Roughly 30 minutes by train, Malbork was built by the Teutonic Knights between 1274 and 1406, the largest castle in the world by land area, a UNESCO site since 1997.
Afternoon: The Castle Museum and amber exhibition.
Evening: Back in Gdańsk for dinner.
Day 5: Gdynia, the Tricity’s other half
Morning: Gdynia’s interwar modernist downtown, intact since it largely survived WWII.
Afternoon: The Emigration Museum (its “UNESCO” status is unverified as of this writing, worth checking directly rather than repeating as fact).
Evening: Back to Gdańsk for dinner.
Day 6: The Hel Peninsula
Morning: A 35km sand-bar peninsula reachable by train plus onward transport, budget more than half a day for the round trip.
Afternoon: Beach towns along the peninsula and the Fokarium seal sanctuary.
Evening: A quiet dinner back in Gdańsk after the week’s longest transit day so far.
Day 7: Toruń, the furthest reach of the week
Morning: Roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by rail from Gdańsk, a genuine full-day commitment. Toruń is a UNESCO World Heritage medieval town.
Afternoon: The birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus in 1473, and a centuries-old gingerbread tradition with its own dedicated museum.
Evening: A last dinner back in Gdańsk, or in Toruń itself before the return train if the schedule suits it better.
Which 7-day split actually works?
Two city days, five day trips (Sopot, Malbork, Gdynia, Hel, Toruń) is a genuine week of Gdańsk and the wider region, not a city trip stretched thin. If Toruń’s travel time feels like too much for a final day, our 6-day itinerary drops it and keeps everything else.
