Dresden 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Four days is our 3-day itinerary , the full Baroque core plus the Albertinum and the Elbe, with a fourth day given over to Saxon Switzerland, the best day trip in the region by a clear margin. - Nothing to pre-book for Saxon Switzerland, the Bastei Bridge itself is free, just catch an early S-Bahn.

Day 1: The Altstadt
Morning: The Frauenkirche, its dome collapsed 15 February 1945 and wasn’t rebuilt until 1993/94-2005, reusing roughly 4,000 salvaged original stones. Dome climb roughly €8-12.
Midday: The Zwinger’s courtyard is free; the Old Masters Picture Gallery inside, home to Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, is part of the roughly €18 combined Zwinger house ticket.
Afternoon: Brühl’s Terrace, the Fürstenzug (a 102-meter mural of roughly 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, the largest porcelain artwork in the world), and the Katholische Hofkirche are all free.
Evening: Sächsischer Sauerbraten or Eierschecke away from the priciest stretch near Neumarkt.
Day 2: The Residenzschloss and the Neustadt
Morning: The Historic Green Vault, mandatory timed ticket, roughly €18, not covered by the SKD combined ticket. It’s also the site of the 25 November 2019 heist: around 21 jewels worth an estimated €100-123 million, five Remmo-clan defendants convicted May 2023, about 70% recovered in 2022, but the 62-carat Dresden White Diamond is still missing. The New Green Vault, Armoury, and Hausmannsturm tower don’t need a timed slot.
Afternoon: A Semperoper tour, roughly €15.
Evening: The Neustadt: the Kunsthofpassage’s “Funnel Wall” and the Goldener Reiter statue are free; Pfunds Molkerei, the 1879 dairy shop Guinness certified the world’s most beautiful, is crowded but worth a photo stop.
Day 3: The Albertinum and the Elbe
Morning: The Albertinum (roughly €14): 19th-to-21st-century art including Caspar David Friedrich.
Afternoon: A paddle steamer with the Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt fleet, running since 1836, the world’s oldest and largest paddle-steamer fleet still operating.
Evening: The Blue Wonder bridge (1893) and, if you have time, the Schwebebahn suspension railway (1901), the oldest of its kind still running.
Day 4: Saxon Switzerland, or a relaxed city finale
Option A, Saxon Switzerland (full day): the Bastei Bridge is reachable by S-Bahn in roughly 35-45 minutes and is genuinely the standout day trip from Dresden, sandstone cliffs rising straight from the Elbe valley. Go before 9am to get ahead of the tour buses; the bridge itself is free.
Option B, a relaxed final day: Pillnitz Palace (roughly €8), a Baroque riverside palace with Chinoiserie touches, or the Panometer (roughly €16, show-dependent), a 360-degree panorama installation, paired with an afternoon in the Grosser Garten, which also holds the city zoo (roughly €16) and a children’s miniature railway.
Is 4 days enough for Dresden?
Four days is the point where Dresden stops being only a city trip and starts including the region around it. The Baroque core, the Elbe, and one properly chosen day trip fit comfortably, Saxon Switzerland especially rewards the extra day since it’s a genuinely different landscape from anything in the city.
