Bruges: The 2-Day Core

Two days is genuinely enough for Bruges’ compact core, a small, walkable city where the whole historic center is easy to cross on foot in under half an hour. The trick is timing, not stamina: do the big two sights before mid-morning and the rest of the day looks after itself.
Day-by-day at a glance
| Day | Focus | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Belfry, Burg, canal boat, Church of Our Lady | Timed Belfry slot, boat paid at the jetty |
| 2 | Groeningemuseum, Begijnhof, De Halve Maan brewery | Museum tickets, brewery tour |
Book these before you go
- A timed Belfry climb slot for summer visits, the walk-up queue gets long by mid-morning.
- Check current Bruges hotel and B&B rates : book inside the ring canal, not near the station, for the full effect of staying overnight.
- A De Halve Maan brewery tour slot if you want a guaranteed time rather than a walk-up.
Day 1: The Markt, the Burg and the canals
Morning: Start at the Belfry on the Markt, about 83 meters tall with a 366-step climb and no lift. Go before the coach groups arrive, the staircase narrows near the top and becomes single-file once it’s busy. From the top, the carillon of 47 bells and the rooftop view over the square are the payoff for the climb.
Midday: Cross into the Burg square next door for the Gothic Stadhuis (city hall, begun 1376) and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a plain exterior hiding a richly decorated upper chapel that venerates a phial said to hold Christ’s blood.
Afternoon: Take a canal boat from one of the jetties around the center, tickets bought at the jetty rather than online, the circuit runs about half an hour. Follow it with the Church of Our Lady, whose 115.6-meter brick tower is the third-tallest of its kind in the world, and whose side chapel holds Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, the only Michelangelo sculpture known to have left Italy in his lifetime.
Evening: Dinner should be a proper stoofvlees, beef braised in beer, with fries on the side. End the day with a slow walk along the canal ring once the light softens and the day-trip crowds have thinned.
Concrete tip: do the Belfry and the canal boat before 10am. Both get materially worse once the day gets going, and neither takes long once you’re not queuing for it.
Day 2: Museums, the Begijnhof and beer
Morning: The Groeningemuseum holds a small but serious collection of Flemish Primitives, Jan van Eyck’s Madonna with Canon van der Paele, Hieronymus Bosch’s Last Judgement triptych, and work by Memling and Gerard David. Give it a genuine hour rather than a rushed twenty minutes.
Midday: Walk to the Begijnhof, a walled former community of beguines now home to Benedictine nuns, part of the separate 1998 “Flemish Béguinages” UNESCO listing. Keep it quiet, it’s a contemplative site, not a photo backdrop. Minnewater, the Lake of Love, sits right beside it for a lakeside lunch break.
Afternoon: Tour De Halve Maan brewery on Walplein, a family operation running since 1856, home to Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik, and known for the roughly 3km underground pipeline it opened in 2016 to move beer to its bottling plant without trucks crossing the medieval cobbles.
Evening: A last dinner and a final canal walk. If you have any energy left, the eastern ramparts and their surviving windmills are the quietest stretch of the whole city, even on a Saturday night.
Concrete tip: if you’re catching a train out, confirm the departure board time before your last coffee. Brugge station’s boards update later than feels comfortable when you’re finishing up nearby.
Getting here: Bruges has no useful airport of its own, arrive via Brussels Airport (the airport-to-Bruxelles-Centraal leg alone runs around €11.60 second class, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours total to Bruges with the connection) or Eurostar into Brussels followed by about an hour on to Bruges. Brugge station is a 15-20 minute walk south of the Markt. For more time, our 3-day itinerary adds a Ghent day trip on top of this same core.
