Almaty 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Seven days is the complete version: the city core, both mountain days, and both major excursions, Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai/Kaindy overnight, instead of picking one. Book these before you go

- Book a Charyn Canyon day tour and a Saty guesthouse for the Kolsai/Kaindy overnight well ahead, both are long drives most visitors do with an organized tour or driver.
- Confirm current access to Big Almaty Lake with a local operator or your accommodation before day 4.
Day 1: Panfilov Park, the Green Bazaar, and Kok-Tobe at sunset
Start with Panfilov Park and the Zenkov Cathedral beside it, a roughly 56-metre wooden Russian Orthodox building from 1907 built without a single nail, still active and free to enter, plus the Memorial of Glory and eternal flame for the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. Move on to the Green Bazaar for dried fruit, kurt, horse meat and kazy sausage, and the Koryo-saram corner’s morkovcha carrot salad, keeping bags to the front in the busier aisles. Have a Kazakh meal nearby, beshbarmak (traditionally horse meat over wide noodles, lamb and beef versions exist, ask before ordering) is worth trying once. Spend the afternoon at the Arbat, then ride the Kok-Tobe cable car (about 8,000 KZT, $16, round trip, verify) up for sunset.
Day 2: Republic Square, the Golden Man, and the mosque
Start at Republic Square and the Independence Monument, topped by the golden Saka warrior behind the “Golden Man” name. The Central State Museum nearby has the full replica of that armor (closed Tuesdays), and the Kasteyev State Museum of Arts, Kazakhstan’s largest, is a short trip away (closed Mondays). The Almaty Central Mosque welcomes visitors outside prayer times with modest dress. Close the afternoon at First President’s Park and its fountains.
Day 3: Medeu and Shymbulak
Take bus 12 to Medeu, the high-altitude ice rink at around 1,691 metres, known for its anti-mudflow dam and the staircase up its face. From there, ride the gondola up to Shymbulak, a separate, higher ski resort, for roughly 5,000-12,000 KZT depending on tier, verify current pricing. The gondola runs year-round, so the views are worth it even without gear.
Day 4: a real nature day
If Big Almaty Lake’s access is open when you check, it’s the highlight: a turquoise, high-alpine reservoir 40 minutes to an hour out of town, though it’s also a working drinking-water supply (swimming banned) with border-zone checkpoints and fire-season closures that can shift access, so verify with a local operator or your accommodation first. If it’s closed, the Kok-Zhailyau trail (roughly 10km round trip, 2.5-4 hours) is Almaty’s most popular day hike, or the shorter Butakovka waterfall hike (about 2-3 hours) starts right at the city’s edge.
Day 5: Charyn Canyon
Charyn Canyon, the “Valley of Castles,” is about 200km and 3-3.5 hours each way, long for a day trip but doable in a full day, usually 10-12 hours round trip, and most visitors book an organized tour rather than self-drive the whole thing. The red-rock canyon formations are the payoff for the drive; bring water, sun protection, and patience for the road time on either end.
Day 6: out to Kolsai Lakes
Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy Lake are roughly 300km from Almaty, 4-6 hours by road, and this is genuinely an overnight, not a rushed day trip; don’t let a tour try to sell you the round trip in a single day. Spend the drive and the afternoon at the alpine Kolsai Lakes, then settle into a guesthouse in Saty village for the night.
Day 7: Kaindy Lake, then back
Kaindy Lake is the reason to have stayed overnight: a drowned forest of submerged spruce trunks rising out of turquoise water, eerie and genuinely unlike anywhere else on this trip. Spend the morning there, then make the long drive back to Almaty in the afternoon for a departure the next day, or a final night in the city if your flight allows it.

Compare Almaty hotel rates on Booking.com for the city nights, and book the Saty guesthouse separately once you’ve settled on a tour or driver for days 6-7. Kazakhstan rates Level 1, normal precautions, from the US State Department, and the one ongoing risk worth planning around is petty theft at the bazaar and on transit, not the city’s 2022 unrest, which is long resolved and doesn’t reflect Almaty today.
