4 Days: LA and the SoCal Day Trips
Same three days as the shorter version, Malibu, Disneyland, San Diego, plus a fourth day that swaps the freeway south for the coast highway north. Only got three days? Drop Santa Barbara and see the 3-day version . Got a fifth day? The 5-day plan adds Catalina Island.

Day 1: Land, Then Malibu and the PCH
Clear LAX, pick up the rental car, get on PCH before midday. Malibu is 36 miles, about an hour out, worse on weekends. Zuma or El Matador for the beach, Neptune’s Net for dinner among the motorcycles. Confirm current PCH road status before you go; the January 2025 Palisades fire left lingering damage in stretches of Malibu into 2026.
Day 2: Disneyland
Anaheim, 45 to 90 minutes from central LA, Orange County, not an LA neighborhood. 2026 single-day tickets run $104 to $224 by date; Park Hopper adds $70-90. Parking is a separate $30-plus. Buy the dated ticket ahead and arrive at rope drop.
Day 3: San Diego
120 miles south on I-5, 2 to 3 hours light traffic, 4-plus at peak. A full day for Balboa Park, the Zoo, and the Gaslamp Quarter if you leave by 7am; no entrance fee, it’s a genuine city. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner is a real alternative to driving both directions.
Day 4: Santa Barbara
96 miles up the 101, 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours through Ventura. Walking State Street and the Funk Zone’s tasting rooms costs nothing; budget $30-60 a person for parking, lunch, and a flight of wine at one of the tasting rooms Santa Barbara’s tourism site lists for the Funk Zone. Stearns Wharf makes a good lunch stop with a view before you head back. Leave by late afternoon if you’re driving this on a weekend; Sunday return traffic on the 101 rivals the 5 south.
Do You Still Need the Rental Car on Day Four?
Yes, and more than any other day on this trip. Santa Barbara has no meaningful train or bus option from LA that beats a 2-hour drive, and the town itself is more pleasant on foot once you’ve parked, so the car’s job is purely getting you there and back.
Is Santa Barbara Worth a Whole Day Versus Just Lunch?
A whole day, if wine tasting or State Street shopping actually interests you; a lunch stop alone barely justifies the 3-plus hours of round-trip driving. If you’re tight on time, this is the day to trade for something closer, since Santa Barbara rewards lingering more than it rewards a rushed pass-through.
What Should You Cut If You Only Have Three Days?
Cut Santa Barbara, not San Diego. San Diego is a full city with more to see per hour spent; Santa Barbara is a slower, prettier day that a shorter trip can’t really afford. See the 3-day version if that’s your call.
