2 Days: LA to the Southwest
Two days is one destination, not a Southwest tour: the 270-mile drive to Las Vegas eats most of both days, leaving one real day in between to actually spend there. For more than a casino weekend, add Death Valley with the 3-day version , or go for the full Utah loop at 7 days .
Book these before you go:
| Day | Stop | Distance from LA | Drive time | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Las Vegas | 270 miles | 4-4.5 hrs | Depart LA morning, Strip by evening |
| 2 | Los Angeles (return) | 270 miles | 4-4.5 hrs | Vegas morning, drive back |
Day 1: The drive out, not a detour
Pick up the rental car in LA and leave by mid-morning; the 270 miles up I-15 through Barstow run 4 to 4.5 hours without traffic, longer if you’re unlucky enough to hit a Friday exodus. Fuel up in Barstow, the only real stop worth making, and treat the drive itself as the first half of the day rather than an inconvenience before it starts. Our Las Vegas Strip guide covers the resort-fee math and what’s actually worth doing once you check in; you’ll have one evening on the Strip, so pick one thing rather than trying to see all of it.
Day 2: One day in Vegas, then the drive back
Spend the morning and early afternoon in Vegas, then leave enough runway to drive the 270 miles back before you’re too tired to do it safely. Sunday evenings back into LA are the slowest window of the week; a Tuesday or Wednesday round trip covers the same 540 miles in noticeably lighter traffic. If Vegas alone isn’t enough of a reason to drive 9 hours round trip, this is the wrong itinerary; the 3-day version adds Death Valley to the same route and makes the drive earn more.
Don’t schedule this trip for a Friday-to-Sunday weekend if you can help it. I-15 gridlocks in both directions at exactly the times most visitors plan to drive it.
