Two days gives you exactly one real decision to make: do you spend both of them on Niagara, or split them between the falls and the wine country next door. I’d split them. Cramming both into a single rushed day means a boat cruise you’re checking your watch through and a tasting flight you’re too wiped to taste. This is the tightest possible version of the Toronto-as-base-for-Ontario plan, so it only covers the one trip that’s actually non-negotiable.

Six Days Means You Can Actually Live in Toronto for a Bit Most itineraries this long start repeating themselves by day four. Seven Days: Loop Both Capitals Instead of Picking One A week is enough to stop treating Toronto as the whole trip and actually run the corridor: Toronto to Ottawa, Ottawa to Montreal direct without backtracking, Montreal back to Toronto to close the loop. Six Days: Ottawa Gets a Real Night This Time The extra day over a five-day trip goes entirely to Ottawa, and it’s the single best upgrade available on this itinerary. A day trip to the capital gets you Parliament Hill and a rushed lunch; an overnight gets you an actual evening in the city, a second museum, and a morning that isn’t spent watching a departure board. Montreal still doesn’t fit here, that needs a seventh day, but Ottawa done properly is worth the trade.

5-Day Toronto Travel Itinerary This is the same downtown-plus-neighbourhoods spine as our 4-day and 6-day versions, just stretched or compressed to fit. Skip the cab line at Pearson. The UP Express train runs every 15 minutes from Terminal 1 to Union Station downtown in 28 minutes flat, for 12.35 dollars one way, or 9.25 with a PRESTO card, and it beats sitting in 401 traffic during rush hour by a wide margin.

Five Days: Ottawa Finally Fits, But Only as a Day Trip Five days is the shortest trip where seeing the actual capital makes sense, and I mean that narrowly: a long day trip, out on an early train and back on a late one, not an overnight. If you want to linger in Ottawa properly, you need six days minimum. Here’s the version that fits in five without you sleepwalking through the last morning.

The Best Thing About Toronto Is Everything Two Hours Away From It Every downtown itinerary quietly assumes you’re staying inside the city for the whole trip: CN Tower, ROM, a market crawl, maybe a Blue Jays game. That’s a fine city break. It is the wrong plan for anyone who actually flew into Ontario. Toronto’s real job is to be a well-connected bed and an airport, because within two to four hours of it sits a wine region, a whitewater gorge, a city with a hundred waterfalls, a Shakespeare festival, cottage-country lakes, and a national park where moose stand in the road.
