Taif’s workshop scene isn’t the pottery-and-painting circuit some cities offer; it’s narrower, more agricultural, and tied directly to what actually grows and gets processed on this particular mountain rather than a generic creative-class offering. Rose distillation, the headline craft Al Hada’s family distilleries, names like Al Gadhi going back close to a century, run hands-on sessions around the copper alembic stills used to make Ward Taifi rose oil and rosewater, timed best to the March into April harvest when petals are being processed at volume rather than a quiet off-season trickle.

The first thing worth knowing about solo travel in Taif is the thing most guides bury at the very bottom: it’s genuinely safe, with virtually none of the street crime that makes some solo destinations require constant vigilance. Souq Al Balad, at your own pace Wandering the pedestrian alleys of Souq Al Balad works especially well solo, since there’s no group pace to keep up with while sampling different varietals of raw sidr and sumra honey from local beekeepers or browsing traditional frankincense and oud burners.

Point a camera anywhere in Taif and it eventually lands on one of five views, and knowing which five ahead of time saves a lot of driving between overlooks scattered across the mountain that don’t actually reward the trip out. View one: the Al Hada escarpment at dusk Standing at the edge of the 2,000-meter drop above Al Hada, the view is the mountain road itself: dozens of illuminated hairpin switchbacks zigzagging down toward the Mecca plains, lit up like a ribbon of fire once the sun goes down.

A hotel with a view is easy to find almost anywhere; a hotel where the view is a working rose valley 2,000 meters up a mountain, cool enough at night to need a blanket even in August, is specifically a Taif thing. Clifftop chalets, not beach resorts Al Hada’s boutique resorts and private clifftop chalets, floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking mountain ravines, are the region’s answer to a romantic base, cool mountain air standing in for the sea view a coastal getaway would offer instead.

Splitting a group of eight or ten across two taxis to see Taif is the wrong move; almost everything worthwhile here scales better as one chartered van and one shared plan than as a caravan of separate cars. Groups set up in the valleys of Ash Shafa or Saiysad National Park with Bedouin tents, carpets and cushions, a fire pit, and a slow-cooked Mandi or Kabsa feast, then stay out for the stargazing once the fire’s burned down.
