Spišský hrad, known in English as Spiš Castle, sits on a travertine hill above the town of Spišské Podhradie in eastern Slovakia. It covers more than 4 hectares, which makes it one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe by area, and its first written mention dates to 1113, though the buildings you see today were raised up over the 12th to 14th centuries.
