Panama has two separate UNESCO listings that get confused with each other constantly. Casco Viejo and the Panamá Viejo ruins in the capital form one, inscribed in 1997 and extended in 2003. The Portobelo and San Lorenzo forts, on the Caribbean coast near Colón, are a different site entirely: Fortifications on the Caribbean Side of Panama: Portobelo-San Lorenzo , World Heritage reference 135, inscribed in 1980, and, worth knowing before you visit, placed on the World Heritage in Danger list in 2012 due to decay and encroaching urban development.
