Travel advice, 31 October 2026: the US State Department rates Kenya at Level 3 (“Reconsider Travel”) and an Ebola outbreak is being reported in Nairobi. Nakuru is not named in the UK or US lists of areas to avoid. Read the UK government Kenya advice and the US travel advisory before you book.
Most of Nakuru’s best sights are lookouts, and several are inside Lake Nakuru National Park. You see them from a vehicle or from the designated picnic and viewpoint sites, so plan the day around the park’s gate hours and bring layers for the cool mornings at about 1,850 m.

Walking is limited around Nakuru. Lake Nakuru National Park is a vehicle-only park: the Kenya Wildlife Service offers no walking safari or bike hire there, so you stay in your vehicle except at the designated picnic and viewpoint sites.

Nakuru is a wildlife destination, so a romantic trip here is built around animals, views and a comfortable lodge, not around spa days or lake cruises.

Travel advice, 31 October 2026: Kenya is at Level 3 (“Reconsider Travel”) in the US State Department system and an Ebola outbreak is being reported in Nairobi. Nakuru is outside the listed do-not-travel areas. Families should read the UK government Kenya advice and the CDC Kenya notice before booking.
Nakuru works well for families because most of what there is to do is easy, short and outdoors. A game drive is the main event, and the museum, the castle lawns and a boat ride on Lake Naivasha give younger children something to do between animals.

Nakuru, Lake Elementaita and Lake Naivasha make a natural two to three day loop on the floor of the Rift Valley.

Nakuru and the Rift Valley lakes are not on the UK or US do-not-travel lists. Read the UK government Kenya advice and the CDC notice before you set off.
Nakuru is a good base for the Rift Valley lakes. The distances below are approximate, and road conditions and traffic change the journey time, so leave early and plan to be back before dark.

Travel advice, 31 October 2026: Kenya is at Level 3 (“Reconsider Travel”) in the US State Department system, with an Ebola outbreak reported in Nairobi, while the UK government and the CDC give no warning for Nakuru itself. Check the UK government Kenya page and the US travel advisory before you commit to dates.
Nakuru has five attractions that suit a guided visit: the national park, Hyrax Hill, Lord Egerton Castle, Menengai Crater and a prehistoric site at Kariandusi near Gilgil.

Nakuru sits on the floor of the Rift Valley at about 1,850 m, so mornings and evenings are cool and a fleece helps on a dawn drive.
