Georgetown is the launch point, not the destination, for Guyana’s real multi-day trips: everything worth three or four nights away sits deep in the interior, reached by small plane or a long drive south and west. International birders rank Georgetown’s Botanical Gardens among the best urban birding sites on the planet, and most visitors who walk in expecting flowerbeds have no idea that reputation exists. 200-Plus Species in One City Park The 185-acre gardens, laid out in 1879, hold over 200 recorded bird species: the blood-colored woodpecker, found almost nowhere outside the coastal Guianas, alongside snail kites, toco toucans, pinnated bitterns and the festive parrot. Specialist guides run walks in the 6:00 to 8:30am window, before the day’s heat builds.

A wooden building with a cast-iron roof crest, standing since 1889 without a single steel beam, is nearing the end of a G$780 million restoration in the middle of Georgetown, Guyana’s capital on the Demerara River. That building, City Hall, is as good a place as any to start.
