Moorea is a heart shaped volcanic island about 17 kilometres northwest of Tahiti, close enough to see across the channel from Papeete on a clear day and easy enough to reach that it works as a day trip, though staying a night or two is worth it.

Seven days is the sweet spot for French Polynesia: enough time for 2 to 3 islands done properly out of the territory’s 118 across five archipelagos, without the transfer days eating into the trip the way they do at shorter lengths.

Six days stretches the classic Moorea and Bora Bora combination by an extra night, split between the two islands rather than bolting a third island on. French Polynesia is 118 islands across five archipelagos, and the honest rule at this length is still 2 to 3 islands done properly rather than chasing more of them.

French Polynesia is 118 islands spread across five archipelagos, an ocean area roughly the size of Europe, but almost everyone who visits spends the whole trip within about 250 kilometres of Tahiti. Five days is enough for the classic two island combination, Moorea and Bora Bora, without rushing either one, which is why it is the shortest length this site recommends adding Bora Bora to at all.

Four days is enough to think about adding Bora Bora, and this plan deliberately doesn’t. Bora Bora is flight only from Tahiti, about 50 minutes each way plus a boat transfer to the resort motu, and squeezed into a 4 day trip that means burning most of a day on transfers for one short stay.

Three days is the 2 day plan with a full extra night, which is enough to actually settle into Moorea instead of just glimpsing it on a day trip. It still stays off Bora Bora, since a flight there and back inside three days is mostly transit.

French Polynesia is 118 islands across five archipelagos, but two days only really works in one small corner of it: Tahiti, plus a single Moorea crossing. This plan does not attempt Bora Bora. Bora Bora is flight only, about 50 minutes from Tahiti, then a boat transfer to the resort, and at two days that transfer alone eats too much of the trip for what comes back.
