The Bay of Kotor’s UNESCO inscription carries a specific name: the “Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor,” listed in 1979 and covering roughly 14,600 hectares of core zone around the inner bay, with a further buffer zone beyond it. The listing wasn’t smooth from the start. An earthquake struck Montenegro that same year, damaging much of the historic building stock inside Kotor’s walls, and UNESCO kept the site on its List of World Heritage in Danger while restoration caught up, only removing it in 2003 (verify exact years).
