Noravank Monastery Noravank stands at about 1,500 m in the red-walled Amaghu (Gnishik) gorge, about 10 km from Areni and 3 km north-east of the abandoned village of Amaghu. The monastery was founded in 1105 by Bishop Hovhannes according to the history of Stepanos Orbelian. The churches are free-standing stone buildings, not cave churches.
The main church, Surb Karapet, also called Surb Stepanos Nakhavka, dates to the early 13th century. Its window tympanum shows God the Father in human form blessing a crucifix.

Areni Walks: Canyon Trails and Village Lanes

What Walking Looks Like Here Areni is a small village rather than a walking-tour town. There are no city-style walking routes, and the best walking is on the trails in the canyon above it and in the Yeghegis valley. The village itself can be strolled slowly: the lanes, the bridge over the Arpa river, the wineries and the church on the hill. Most visitors combine a short village stroll with one trail.

Travel advice as of October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The US lists Armenia at Level 2 and tells travellers not to go to the Azerbaijan border region. Areni, Noravank and the sights below lie outside those areas. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go, and stay on main roads in Syunik and Gegharkunik.

A Quiet Wine Village Areni is a small village, and its romance is in the vineyards and the red canyon walls rather than in resorts or spas. A couple’s visit is built from tastings, a dinner, a night at a guesthouse and a walk at Noravank. Plan a night or two, and book a driver or tour transport if you plan to taste.
Momik WineCube The Momik WineCube is a hilltop tasting among the vines, hosted by Nver and Narine Nazaryan.

Distances at a Glance Areni sits on the M2 highway in Vayots Dzor, about 108 to 115 km from Yerevan, which is 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Yeghegnadzor is the next town on after Areni. All times below are approximate road figures, so allow extra for photo stops and slow mountain roads.
From Yerevan: Khor Virap, Areni-1 and Noravank This is the classic full day. Khor Virap is about 45 km from Yerevan, Areni is about 110 to 115 km and Noravank is about 122 km, so the far end is roughly 2 hours each way.

Areni With Kids: Short Stops and Workshops

What to Expect Areni is a wine village, and most of its visitor offer is tastings that are for adults. Areni has no petting zoo or children’s attraction. Families get the most from short, varied stops: a cave, a church, a workshop and some time outdoors in the canyon. Plan for a quiet visit of a day or two, and take water and sun protection from May to October.
Climbing for Beginners The Areni sector of the Noravank canyon has eight easy routes, graded 5a to 6a+, which suit beginners and children.

Wine Tasting Areni is the centre of Armenian wine tourism. The local red grape is Areni, also called Areni Noir, and the local white is Voskehat. Most wineries ask for a booking, and anyone who tastes should hire a driver or name a non-drinking driver for the day.
Hin Areni has a tasting room on the main highway in the village and a second one beside the Areni-1 cave. Its own website lists three packages.
